Charlie Ward was one of the greatest college athletes ever. He won the Heisman trophy in 1993… but surprisingly wasn’t drafted into the NFL. Why?

  1. I don't think he would've done very in the NFL. It doesn't look like he was a great passer. All off those clips are of him running or running and then passing. We've seen many of those types not do well at all in the NFL unless they have very special speed and have really good size. Mike Vick got hurt a lot, VY wasn't very good, Robert Williams was basically one and done because of injury, Cam had three really good seasons and that's about it. Colin had like two good seasons. You have to have serious pocket skills to be a good NFL QB. Patrick Mahomes passes first and second, as does Burrow who is pretty agile. Lamar has done terribly in the playoffs and that new deal is an absolute joke.

  2. It’s bo no. Not bah no. Do a little research before butchering someones name. See this all the time on videos made by non sports fans trying to get views on sports videos. But I guess I viewed it so mission accomplished for the creator. But just terrible that you actually don’t know the pronunciation.

  3. He might have been the best college football player of the 90's.

I'm trying to think who else

  4. He went undrafted in football bc he committed to playing basketball, that’s how the Knicks picked him in the draft

  5. Ward screwed Ward. I bet he be better at peace knowing he would have been a better Tom brady with more championship and probably a Billionaire. But it sounds like he at peace is like sour grapes syndrome. He should have takene the girl who loves him to the prom than the pretty shallow girl.

  6. I liked this video with one exception. You have your information wrong about his birthplace and where he grew up. His name is CHARLIE WARD JR. the son of Charlie Ward Sr. Former ALL-AMERICA QB for the FAMU RATTLERS and backfield mate of the BULLITT BOB HAYES! And they're from THOMASVILLE, GA (THE ROSE CITY) just 30 miles north of TALLAHASSEE, FL. How do I know? Because I am a Classmate and football teamate of his with the THOMAS COUNTY CENTRAL YELLOW JACKETS! Those are our high school highlights you were showing. You provided good information here but please give us our recognition. We're a town of 20,000 people but have produced numerous college and professional athletes. Especially NFL PLAYERS who include WILLIAM ANDREWS, GUY MCINTIRE, HENRY CHILDS, ERIC CURRY, MYRON GUYTON, DANNY COPELAND, JESSE SMALL and BRANDON THOMPSON and SAM MADISON! Do your research, you will be surprised.

  7. Its because the Heisman trophy voters are biased to west coast players as Marshall Faulk was the best college player that year !

  8. My favorite Nole of all time. I loved watching him on Saturday afternoons and also on the bb court. Would've loved to see him try football in the pros. But if he was cool with basketball, so was I. A real leader in every sense.

  9. 5:52 I was at this game in the stands as it was our 1st game my freshmen year. It was a torrential downpour and Charlie Ward was spectacular as they mauled us.

My first time seeing a Heisman Trophy winner play in person and he lived up to the award.

Also had the chance see him again a few months later on the basketball court.

Remarkable athlete and seems to be just as good of a person.

  10. Without a pro football team in Baltimore, Maryland was my team and I loved watching college football in the early 90s. Charlie Ward was that guy for ACC rival FSU, watching that team was an absolute joy. I loved college basketball, Charlie Ward was that guy for FSU. College baseball, I didn't pay much attention to until recently. He is one of my favorite athletes of all time.

  11. All the reasons the NFL gave were bullspit..they didn't want too many black qbs in the league at that time

  12. I'll help the poster with their confusion. Ward was a good, but not exceptional college qb who was on a team loaded with future NFL players. Even had it not been known he was going to choose basketball, he was 5th round NFL draft pick at best. As wonderful a person as Charlie Ward was and is, he wasn't an NFL caliber qb they way the game was played at that time. Given his style of play, he'd have lasted half a season. In todays cupcake game, he could play qb, but not in the 90's He was far from the best qb in New York while he played for the knicks.

  13. Charlie ward grew up in Thomasville ga buddy you didn't do your homework. He was the QB of Thomas county central h.s. his father was the coach there. I went to school with him.

  14. He would be drafted today. However, he is short (for a QB), not particularly fast, and his arm strength is not on the level of average NFL QBs. He won the Heisman because he was the best offensive player on the best team. Simple as that.

Overall a great athlete for sure. Not on the same level as Bo or Prime. Danny Ainge and Brian Jordan played 2 sports professionally. No one compares them to Bo or Prime.

  15. He didn''t deserve the Heisman. Marshal Faulk was so much better than anyone else in football

  16. What happened was Charlie Ward pissed off NFL teams by saying that if he was not drafted in the first round, then he would refuse to play for any NFL team that drafted him afterwards. Hence making it to where Ward became undesirable in the eyes of NFL teams.

Also Ward while a really good QB, was not 1st round worth. As he lacked the arm strength, height, accuracy, and despite his mobility, took a high number of sacks despite having a damn good FSU O-Line ( fsu o-line was very good in the 90's)
