Bill was definitely channeling his inner Jerry Krause back in 2017… Bill’s greatest achievement was drafting and keeping TB12 ; his worst decision was letting him walk.
Maybe that will put the discussion to rest. The greatest player coach relationship in sports history ends in peace and reconciliation.
Brady not being extended is definitely a sore spot with the guy,,no doubt..Brady earned that extension and earned the right to play here as long as he wanted…..But The #1 reason and source of contention over several years,and the biggest reason why Brady was upset and left was because Bill wasn't giving Brady help at outside receiver in any way…Not having outside/perimeter guys cuts the playbook into a fraction,and the effect trickles down to even the running game….And with Tom taking pay cut after pay cut making way less than his counteparts over all of those years while watching Bill stick the middle finger at Brady and mcdaniels by spending free agent money on backups for backups, defense and special teams, and overpaying marginal players while lighting ridiculous amounts of draft picks on fire made it worse….And sitting Butler,undermining the entire teams effort made it even worse than that….. Add to that,several years in the 2010s we had dead cap hits of 20 million plus full of bad cap and spending decisions..Bill wanting to be the man winning "his way" with less talent and more about coaching, took precedence over helping the team win,,this is clear…Sitting Malcolm Butler is your proof that Bill is above the team..It's all about Bill…..And now he's doing the same thing to Mac…Bill is too smart of a football guy to miss on that many picks over that many years…I don't blame Brady for being upset,one bit.
No Nick, it doesn't happen EVER. Twenty years? Can't think of another one in sports (not one involving an athlete); don't think we'll ever see it again.
Letting Brady go was not a mistake, because the Patriots were in a bad position due to a serie of poor draft years by Belichick. There is no way the Pats would have been much better in the last three years with Brady. The important thing to remember here is that Belichick lost it in the last 7 or 8 years. First as a GM with poor drafts where he single handedly took bad decisions against the opinion of his scouting staff. Then he lost it as a head coach in the last few years, especially last year putting Patricia and Judge in charge of the offense. I don't know what is the problem with Belichick. He looks like a guy who started at some point to believe he is a genius. I hope that last year showed him for good that he is not. He can be a great head coach, but he needs to be well surrounded and he needs to listen to the people whose jobs are to help him being a great head coach. The draft is back in the right direction. I hope the coaching will head in the same way with the hiring of O'Brien.
I do think they should have extended Brady, but some people are acting like he would have guaranteed a deep playoff run. The team had other roster holes so still would not have been a Super Bowl contender.
STOP defending Bill for pushing Brady out!! When a city has an athlete of this magnitude you simply run out the clock until the wheels fall off, he means more to Pats Nation than wins and losses, Tom Brady is his own economy. Furthermore don’t sit there and tell me Bill was acting based on what he thought was best for the franchise, he showed Brady the door then walked into an abyss of mediocre replacements ending in a Cam Newton/Brian Hoyer season. No, that’s not good for the franchise, in no universe is three-shoulder-surgery Cam Newton better than Tom Brady. This argument holds zero water, Bill and Brady clearly hated each other at the end- it’s the only conclusion that makes any sense.
