Being a MTL/CGY fan, this is exactly what I thought of regarding Cole. I think he signs 7 or 8 years at close to 9mil aav. MTL need to set the team up to win for the better part of a decade. This is a big piece fo the puzzle.
Maybe im missing something but wht would the leafs want mathews ? Hes garbage signing him, marner, and even worse taveras to the massive contracts they had not only destroyed the economy of the league but crippled the leafs the moment you spend half your cap on 3 dudes worth half there contracts at best you are guaranteed to win zero cups
Jack Hughes seems like he cares more about winning than money, don't bankrupt the team and you'll get better players to play with. Caufield looks the same, hope Montreal can lock him up, such a bright future.
For once I agree with you, the Habs need to take the chance and secure Caufield for the very long term. 8×8 year contract makes the most sense. However I imagine the naysayers will point to Carey Price and say "Oh yeah, look how well that turned out!" Regardless of Carey's situation, you just do not take a chance, not to take that risk. Things happen, and if it works out, those same naysayers will be back saying, the habs made the right call.
He's just not worth 10M$… He's a one dimensional small forward that scores alot. Suzuki is a better player, the captain, a center and bigger so theres no way Caufield should make more than him. His best season is 43 points…. 8M$ for 8 years is more than fair….

you're comparing centers (hughes and stutzle) to a winger. being a center adds $$$ to your value. IMO the Habs GM should use those contracts to get Caulfield on an 8 yr deal at an AAV of $7 – $7.5. He's going to score goals and you have to pay for that but he's one-dimensional and if you pay a winger too much you end up in playoff hell like the leafs. I love Caufield but he shouldn't be paid more than Nick, a center and our captain.
