Rick Clunn – Inside The Marvellous Mind of a Master on MERCER-100

Rick Clunn is a 4-time Bassmaster Classic Champion, 16-time Bassmaster winner, 32-time Classic Qualifier & a former Bassmaster AOY. Beyond all of those trophies and accolades, Rick Clunn is an absolute anomaly. What he is doing in fishing is not happening in any other sport or competitive activity on earth. At 76 years old he just kicked off his 49th season competing at the top level of the sport. At a time that may be more dominated by young anglers than ever before, Rick Clunn is almost 5 decades into his legendary career. His incredible influence is seen in every single pro fishing today. Clunn is not only a driven competitor but his silent approach and down-to-earth outlook on life has almost turned him into a mystical character in the eyes of many. Rick Clunn is a unicorn. When tournaments are over he disappears into the tranquility and beauty of the Ozark Mountains. But this week for our 100th episode Rick agreed to find WIFI and join us for a very rare, very open and very candid conversation. Thank you Rick!

  1. There was no question who I hoped to book for Episode 100. Thankfully he agreed. I can’t thank Rick Clunn enough of such a open & honest conversation. Thank you all for your support each & every week. You guys built this show to what it is, Thank you all.
    P.S don’t forget to Like & Subscribe 😉👍

  2. The most informative podcast on fishing and real life access to the power of the mind I have ever listened to. I would like to hear Rick and Mercer again. Cool 😎 work Dave one of your best

  3. I had the fortune to be a co-angler in his boat on Lake Champlain back in 2007, when the Elites still had non-boaters. His focus and awareness of everything going on around him was just incredible — I had heard about it, but seeing it in person was just awesome. Nonetheless, he was truly gracious all day to me and just a real gentleman.

  4. What an inspiration, I have so much more respect for Rick after this. I feel like this episode was created for me. I will watch it again just like you said. Thx Dave.

  5. When I was kid. My friends had football and basketball guys as there “Hero’s” “Rolemodels”.
I had Rick Clunn and the BASS pros of the late 70’s early 80’s. There pictures cut from BASS magazines on my walls.
    Clunn is from Houston, Texas.

  6. This is the only fishing podcast that I have watched twice!!! Awesome material in this one that applies to so much more than fishing.

  7. I fished a Bass master open on Lake Toho. When I was pulling my boat after day one Ish Monroe and Rick Clunn were there. Ish started talking and naming all the wins Rick had. Which were amazing and took a while to do. But when he was finally done Rick said “I also won the BFL all American”. It surely was a fun moment.

  8. This right here is exactly what I needed to hear. Rick Clunn is the man! I got so much out of this show I’ll absolutely be thinking more how he explained. Trust the instincts and immerse yourself in nature

  9. One day this will all be gone just like the dinosaurs. The Blue Trophy is actually finding out a way to live your life doing what you love. Great interview Dave!

  11. Episode 100? The big deal was Rick His incite into life is amazing. Some of us older guys know things via experience, but can always learn. As with all humanity, we always have something to learn and teach. God bless you all.

  12. Tremendous interview, Dave and Rick! Some of the dates mentioned are a little off, but that's certainly understood. I'm hoping to see you both again, if the Elite Series returns to South Dakota.

  13. Rick Clunn called you a good angler, I know that felt good to the ego. haha! Great show Dave.

  14. Man Dave Rick is quit a deep thinker. Great interview. Everyone seems to keep getting better !! All in the timing !!

  15. As a newcomer who actaully doesn’t bass fish, this convo wasn’t deep at all……It was simply genuine, and it was awesome!

  16. Mr. Clunn is a incredible man. I wrote 2 quotes from him in my journal during the podcast. He truly is a modern day philosopher and joeyB said below.

  17. Been saving this for couple weeks for a day I had time to watch… JUST WOW !! What an awesome interview!!

  18. I am 71 years old and a lifelong fisherman. That has to be the best fishing b-day tube video I have ever seen, by far. Thank you.

  19. It took me hours to listen to this…. Rewind… listen again… back again and again, listen some more…. Thanks Dave and Rick

  20. Rick is definitely on my Mt. Rushmore of fishing and Dave you did another incredible interview!

  21. Dave, thank you for this extraordinary interview – in depth into the meaning of fishing and purpose of living. Thank you!

  22. Mr. Clunn is by far my favorite angler / public figure …….. the man is a national treasure

  23. Thank you, Rick Clun, for sharing your viewpoints on professional fishing, nature, and life in general. I am 55 and a 3rd generation owner of a lake home on Lake of the Ozarks in Missourah. My grandfather bought the property 29 years after the dam was built. I, too, tournament fish. Strictly as an amateur. My day job is an Electrical Engineer. The older I become, the more I appreciate the sacrifices my grandfather and father did to keep our place at the lake. I have 3 childen and 4 grandchildren. Like my grandfather and father, I try to teach every aspect of fishing, values and live in general to them. I have followed B.A.S.S. since your first classic win. You have persevered through your career and are truly an ambassador to our sport. I play and follow golf as much as fishing. Your story is similar to Ben Hogan's life and career. May the rest of your time in this lifetime provide you with good fortune and peace. Dave Mercer, thank you for providing a venue that allows others, including myself, the opportunity to learn more about the professionals in the sport that we cherish and promote to others. You did an excellent job in presenting your questions to Rick and were a very good listener. Some of the down to earth stories Rick shared remind me of several times I have personally spoken to a few of our area professionals in the Ozarks such as Denny, Guido, Dion, and Payton. I have seen Dieon launch the Chevy wrapped boat at the Gravois ramp, then walk down to the courtesy dock with a plastic bag of crappie jigs and lead heads in the spring. I didn't see any bait casters on the front deck.

  24. Love to see Rick Clunn and KVD. Have a fish off! Two rivers and three lakes. No electronics or Live scope. Just using their brain's to find fish. 0ne million dollar's for each win, biggest fish of the day and most pound's. Every ounce counting for 8 hrs of fishing. 5 million dollar's for The "G.O.A.T" TITLE Win! Now, That's something to watch. I have nothing against KVD. But, Give Rick Clunn his do. KVD is retiring. Rick is still out there fishing. Great 100 show! Dave. Many more to you. Shawn.
