  1. As a result of your lessons I have been concentrating on turning that left hip immediately and side bend. It has made a world of difference. I used to hit the ball consistently on the toe (and swiped across it) and tried various fixes. When I seriously focused on real front hip turn, and side bend, my hits became centered. Almost as if by magic. The face squares naturally. Compression is better. Ball flies straight. I can't thank you enough.

  2. Great drill. I think that one of the reasons why I was losing hip depth in the backswing was due to listening to all that terrible advice from the late 1990's and early 2000's telling you to take the club back in a straight line. If the club is to go around the body in an arc it must go onto the inside fairly early in the backswing. Staying on the target line for too long in the takeaway makes my hips start to move closer to the ball.

  3. This is such a valuable drill that auto fixes so many swing flaws. Everyone should be doing this drill everyday. If it’s good enough for Tiger, we know it’s excellent for the rest of us. Cheers.

  4. As I watch my ball mark get closer and closer to the hosel this technique is an instant cure. Thank you again for your excellent advise!

  5. If this was all you knew about the golf swing it would be enough to enjoy the game. Too much talk about arm angles wrist hinge etc.. You nailed it, thank you!

  6. Not sure about your thoughts but I couldn’t figure out anything in the golf swing outside of proper grip until I figured out lead side bend. I couldn’t figure out take-away, hip depth, rotation, impact position, or literally any proper aspect of the swing, until lead side bend was correct. For me, lead side bend correct = all other positions falling into place. I see it’s a natural motion for you at the 2:30 mark. As you push your lead hip back, you increase lead side bend.

  7. I get so anxious that you’ll hit one through the gap in the net while demonstrating a swing fault 😩
Nonetheless, love your videos! They’ve helped me so much understand what each part of the body needs to do in order to hit it consistently. Thank you!

  8. I’m beginning to enjoy your videos, you always have a drill to help feel it instead of just saying do this with no feedback. I always used to fire and have no separation. I started to feel almost a pause and give myself enough time to get the lead hip going then swing. Taken so much off my handicap by this but felt I had a bad day yesterday was locked out alot so trying to reinvent this feeling again.

  9. I feel whatever I’m working on for the day if I try do some really good reps before I go out just subconsciously take affect. I do have a problem once I get out on the course to almost block out everything that I worked on. But at the end of the round when I contemplate on it I feel minor changes take it’s own affect. I just wish I could be more in the moment at times

  10. Absolutely LOVE this channel, Jonathon! you are our go-to source for drills. follow up question, where is the foot pressure or how does the feet feel on the downswing and pushing the left hip back? where should we be pushing off our feet to generate the most efficient rotation? thank you!

  11. I had a lesson on Tuesday and this move was the key thing we worked on. The pro was placing a golf club grip end behind my left hip at the top of my backswing and getting me to bring my left hip back to meet it on the downswing. The whole swing feels more natural, athletic and functional when doing so. Its incredible!

  12. I watched this video before my skins game yesterday and had to come back today and comment about how important this is. Most of the time I've been watching your videos and concentrating on clearing my left hip through the shot. This is a wonderful move but just as important is making sure you activate the right hip in the backswing to turn back like your video promotes.

After fighting pulled shots the last few times I've played it was clearly shown to me that my flaw wasn't in not clearing my left hip but more about not getting my right hip back from the start. IOW's, if you clear your left hip to early because you never made a proper right turn, your body will stop prematurely and the arms will keep going and left it goes!

So yesterday on the range before the skins game I took notice of my right hip and made sure to make a proper turn. Bingo Bango! my iron play was wonderful and I won a closes to the pin for $20 rocks. Now I need to learn how to read greens properly…..

    Thank you Johnathon

  13. This is by far the one that’s worked for me. I didn’t even go the range, I watched this then played the next day and I shot 42 points. Serious understanding of the fundamentals of the swing. Thank you

  14. thanks for these vids man, im fairly new to the game of golf (cricket and tennis player previously), i hit some really nice irons, but often i feel like im stood up too tall at impact and im flicking across with the hands and end up hitting big drawing hooks to the left. i had no idea what was happening, but these videos are breaking it down really well! i also hit it fat/thin sometimes because i sway to the right in the backswing, would love some drills about pressure transfer versus (better than) swaying the body. thanks!
