As Waterford exit the Championship in the group stages again, All-Ireland winners Paul Murphy and James Skehill joined Will O’Callaghan on The Hurling Pod to assess what’s gone wrong for the Deise.
On this week’s pod:
(0:00) – Skehill reveals he’s spent 5 weeks preparing his draft. NFL fandom runs deep in hurling circles.
(5:54) – Waterford lose their 6th straight Munster SHC game and Lohan has knocked Davy out of the Championship again.
(11:16) – What was Waterford’s warm-up huddle about? Is their system ‘broken’? Puck-out strategy, players not in their best positions.
(24:01) – Waterford’s issues run deeper than just the senior team, the players also need to take responsibility.
(39:38) – Clare’s performance wasn’t perfect but getting the two-points is what mattered. Tony Kelly’s 13 points, Clare’s aggressive tackling is working, tightening up at the back. This weekend’s Munster games set up beautifully.
(46:42) – What kind of response can we expect from Limerick this weekend against Tipperary? Forde’s absence a ‘huge blow’ for Tipp. Tweaks Cahill can make in defence.
(59:43) – How to deal with playacting in an attempt to get opponents booked or sent-off? More dangerous hit hits this week. Who would Murphy like to win the All-Ireland outside of Kilkenny? Is the sweeper now dying out?
(01:21L00) – Your questions and Skehill’s long-awaited draft,

davy has clearly just made up these random tactics in the hope that he can find success and say oh look at me arent i so smart to create this new style……. 3 wins in his last 16 games as manager one of them was laois.
Live pods the next two Sundays, 8pm on OTB YouTube
Skehill is the only honest 1with a bit of turmoil.
Sick of hearing what's wrong with Waterford? What's wrong with Limerick? Clare are really good….
Of course a hard hit benefits. Joyce for cork was shouldered in the head early on. He wasn't the same after it
Paul Murphy totally misses the point re the scheduling of the fixtures and disadvantage to clare. Nothing to with rest and fitness. All to do with the integrity of the competition. Clare have a bye in round 5 this year – some one has to be in munster. But clare also play first in round 4 – totally unfair and avoidable. Clare will have their 4 games played by the 7th match in munster of 10 matches – while limerick and tipp will have just played 2. Clare should be going last in Round 4 – for integrity reasons. If Clare lose by 3.30 this sunday – then LK / Cork / tipp can saunter their way to qualifying without breaking sweat / injuries / suspensions in the last 3 games. The matches this sunday should have been flipped as regards the scheduling. If Tipp / LK was at 2pm – then you would have a more genuine game. Now at 4pm – a chance it will mean far less. This is a Clare point this year – but the point is for every year in munster- whoever has a bye in Round 5 ( a serious scheduling / integrity disadvantage itself) have to play last in round 4.
The smile on Skehill doing the draft, he looks so proud with himself
Did I miss the lads giving their predictions for the next round in Munster ?
Hope Lohan drops Hayes for the next game. Took him off and dropped him last year for doing stupid things, hes as bad if not worse this year. Tries to be a hard man and not working for him. Needs to focus on the ball cos hes a liability at the moment, in a dodgy full back line.
James Maddison, Jack Grealish (Man City) two of the worst to dive.
Ballygunner have ruined waterfords next generation,I can guarantee many kids will quit from other Gaa teams at young ages as I seems impossible to beat ballyG also with population of ballygunner area Waterford gaa will never grow
Some going by Skehill on that draft. Really well thought. This pod is excellent with Murphy abusing Skehill, Skehill being a wild card and Will trying not to laugh all the time.
Great work all round!!
James Skehill, the reluctant "Gaelic Franco Norman", would make a fortune writing fairytales.
For Waterford, they need to sack Davy an go in-house. Possibly as the De La Salle/Ballygunner manager would know all the senior players in the county.
I think Wexford system needs to do the same thing bc I haven't seen it as bad in 6/7 years
Just listening to the section about old Waterford. What about the time they won a Munster title when the free taker (Flynn) scored a goal against cork outside the 21 meter line. No shilds on the helmets, the glory days.
Spent most time talking about nfl??
Hi lads. Simple solution to this Leinster and Munster conundrum. How about:
1st and 2nd in munster and leinster both qualify. 1st straight to all ireland semi final, 2nd to all ireland quarter final with home advantage. 3rd in munster play 4th in Leinster and vice versa with the winners travelling to play their quarter final tie. It ends this munster v leinster conversation…. earn your place in the quarter final if you are good enough.
Was already a huge Skehill fan to begin with and now discovered he's a Pats fan…..

Lads, what ye've ended up with is the idea for next big video game: Championship Manager 2024 – Hurling edition.
