Thriller! Mawj denies Tahiyra in classic QIPCO 1000 Guineas | Racing TV

Mawj gained a scintillating success in the Qipco 1000 Guineas, getting the better of favourite Tahiyra after an epic duel up the Rowley Mile at Newmarket.

Trained by Saeed bin Suroor, the Exceed And Excel filly showed guts aplenty under a superb ride from Oisin Murphy to score by half a length.

The 9-1 winner had to do the hard work on the near side as the 20-strong field split into two groups – and it always looked like being a two-horse battle from the dip.

Tahiyra fell out of the stalls, but made silky-smooth headway under Chris Hayes and the Dermot Weld-trained filly looked the most likely winner a furlong out.

However, on her first start of the season, the Moyglare winner – sent off the 6-4 market leader – just lost out to the battle-hardened Mawj, who had twice won in Meydan over the winter.

The pair were seven and a half lengths clear of Kieran Cotter’s Matilda Picotte, who had helped the set the pace on the far-side group and stuck to her guns gallantly. Caernarfon was fourth at 50-1 for Jack Channonn.

  1. How to F##k up a super star horse..Give it to D Weld to train and let C Hayes ride it..they completely destroyed Homeless song and now they doing the same with Tahirya.

  2. Tahiyra !! You cost me about £500. Had £180 going on to that at 7/4. Hate losing like that. Rather it run like FAV in the 2000 Guineas yesterday n run a stinker but 2 get so close ? Feel like av binn robbed but if I'm being honest, if Tahiyra was the superstar sum said she cud b, then she should av went on n won the race. And Mawj was on top at the end. But I'm feelin lowa than a snakes belly.

  3. Looks to me that Tahiyra was a little unlucky. Had to exert a little too much energy after the poorish start to get on terms and it showed in the last hundred yards or so.

  4. Heartbreaker. Love Tahiyra, got beaten by a fitter horse. Great effort. She will be back!!!! Will never be 20s again😢.

  5. Am i wrong in sayin this is not an important race anymore? Weld before the race says his horse wasnt fully tuned up for this race and will come on for it and its a long season blah blah blah…total joke tahiyra will blow the winner out of the water when they run next..its completely disrespectful to the race and the punters..probably welds last worldclass horse and he decides to lose her unbeaten record because he wants her ready for a race in November…clown.

  6. Won’t happen again and weld needs to stop being scared to run her…fitness won the day

  7. If Chris Hayes switched his stick like he should have done, he would have won..disapoing jockey

  8. Great weekend for Aidan. At least his one didn't finish last this time. Maybe it's time he changed jockeys and had a couple of prep races at 3. Rumour is that Coolmore are sending their horses to 'Shark' Hanlon. At least he'd give you a smile and develop horses from 2 to 3.

  9. Surely Murphy should of swapped side he was using whip in he was leaning into tahiyra all the way – plus mawj was 100% race fit she won’t get near the aga khans horse again!!

  10. Excelente carrera 👌 de 20 caballos con sus jockeys 🏇🏇🏇🏇 y al final entrevistan al dueño del caballo ganador y al Jockey!
    Saludos desde México! 🇲🇽

  11. Tahiyra was put in the stalls first she must have been in there for minutes and was slowly away.

  12. Both very good horses, Tahiyra is a superstar. Not fully wound up here and will be the best filly around this year. Oisin hard to get by anyway and mawj is more battle hardened with a lot of experience, plus she had race fitness after a campaign in meydan.
