Which Arm Actually Controls the Golf Swing?

Learning how to swing a golf club properly can be complicated, so let’s make this an easy golf swing tip. It’s not about how to make a lead arm golf swing or trail arm golf swing, but rather what happens when one overpowers the other.

In this golf lesson, Todd Kolb shows us what happens when the trail arm in the golf swing takes over, the tendencies when you use the lead arm in the golf swing too much, and some simple golf swing drills to help you work on both!

  1. From Bernhards Bay, NY (near Syracuse, NY). I appreciate your videos, but how about some help for those of us who are fighting a hook, or worse yet, a pull hook?

  2. From Kingsville, Ontario. My main problem with irons and driver is hitting at the heel. I have stood further away with no luck. I feel like I’m dropping my trail shoulder with the club face wide open (irons). Any suggestions?

  3. What a great topic Todd. Long Island, NY here. 62yo that is a true southpaw. Everything I do in life is lefty. But for some odd reason, I golf righty. Feels natural to me. Maybe that's why my lead arm is dominant in the swing. I never suffered from the slice either. I can fade on command when need too. Other than that, it's a straight shot or nice draw. Thanks for all you guys do. Love the channel.

  4. My name is Jim McDowell and I'm from Metairie Louisiana I really enjoy your videos the problem I'm having right now is with my irons I can't seem to get the distance that I need to get on the Green

  5. My trail arm rests on my right side result is a narrow backswing. If I take the club back with my trail I do get wider but shot results are pretty varied (thin, fat). 😊

  6. From Park Rapids MN , I am working on slowing down and trying to get more consistent, thanks for all your tips.

  7. This is great, something i never really thought of and never heard anybody explain until now.

    Coming in from Boston, MA!!!!

  8. For me it was bending my left wrist on the backswing (right headed) and I was opening my club and sending everything to the right. I discovered flattening my wrist squared the club. Right now I have to consciously slow my backswing and make the adjustment and my swing slows to about 85% and the ball goes much further than the slice 😅

And I'm from the Napa Valley, CA

  9. thanks- maybe take divots in straigh lines? i hear (at my club) that helps a lot in recovery of the practice area

  10. Im from London Kentucky, I started playing golf just 2 years ago. Im playing now off of 10.5 handicap and I want to get down to low single figures this year, whats the best tips you can give me to get there. My driving distance is only around 225, iron play is decent, chipping and pitching is strong, and putting is fair. How do i get to where i want to be.

  11. Very good subject. I am an experienced golfer from Las Vegas and have played more than 45 years. On my tee shot, in order to draw the ball, I aim right side of target line. Often times, I just push to the right where I aim (i.g., fail to close the club face at impact). In this case, which side of arms should I focus more? I always enjoy your tips. Thanks.

  12. Does this hold true if you are left hand dominant but play right handed?

  13. Houston Texas…I've gotta work on the lead arm pull…It certainly can't hurt my game…

  14. Granbury, TX. I struggle with contact on my irons. I recently shot a 41 on the front side (par 34) and then ballooned to 50 (par 36) on the back side. Had at least 4 or 5 fats on the back side. It's getting REALLY FRUSTRATING!!!

  15. Great advice, Todd. Thanks. I had an "Aha" moment recently. I was watching an interview with Moe Norman and he said something that I've found really helpful, which was to try to feel you are brushing your stomach with the elbow of the trail arm when you swing through. I tried it and it has really helped me not to swing over the top/around and to get a straighter ball trajectory (my bad shots are usually hooks, rather than slices). I noticed that when you demonstrated the lead arm swing, supporting the forearm with your trail hand, you were doing just that.
