Releasing the Golf Club

In this video I will be explaining what release is and what the best players in the world do. A lot of people have different ideas of what release is and what is really happening so Im hoping to bring more clarity as to what you should be looking for and what movements are being applied.

  1. You read my mind with this one. Working on that release. You should try to do a course vlog at the course that LIV played

  2. Jonathan, over the years my right side/arm wants to be the dominant side. Normally causing low hooks, or fat iron shots. Whats the key to arm pressure?

  3. When I get to the correct P6 position, I feel like I'll hit it miles right hence why I approach P6 from a wider (flip) position. I guess I'm not supinating the left arm. However, I always thought forearm rotation was bad and lead to inconsistency.

  4. Great video. I am implementing through lessons some new mechanics. I occasionally hit behind the ball, especially with long clubs. Wondering if this will help.

  5. Hi Jonathon. Do you hit with your right arm or left arm? I feel like if I were snap with my right arm I would have more… solid feel? Sorry if it is a stupid question but it is troubling me…

  6. I am trying to work on this and I found this video helpful. When I do the drill you suggested at the end, it sometimes causes me to close the face too early and hook the ball to the left. I think my grip is solid, as I can see the knuckles on both of my hands. Is it just that I turn my wrists too early and close the club-face too much before impacting the ball?
BTW, enjoy your videos a lot and want to see more on course content!

  7. Fantastic! The best instruction of club release! Will go and try out in my next practice. Thanks for this. 🎉

  8. Great explanation! I've watched many many videos but this is the first that successfully explains the mechanics . The reason "why" is finally clear. Thanks!!!

  9. This has quickly become my favorite golf instruction channel, just crystal clear explanations and with no assumptions about what a golfer should already know.

  10. Thanks much for the videos.
For me, releasing the hands quickly as you have mentioned, will cause big hooks. I understand what you are saying but the only way I know to prevent the hook is to turn the hips faster and not allowing the club head to go past my hands too quickly.
What is your suggestion on releasing the club head fast but not hooking. Thanks in advance.

  11. does that pronation happen naturally or are you doing it consciously.. my coach said it should happen naturally if you don't interfere in the swinging of the arms. I am getting the impression, that you do it as an intentional motion.

  12. Tried so hard for the longest time to not let the release happen and to rotate hard really killed my distance, this is what I needed

  13. so by slowing down the swing or like you did stopping the swing, your club head will sling shot past your body?

  14. I understand the pronation/supanation aspect the swing, and it makes since especially when you demonstrate it; however, some will say you're using your hands when you should clear the left hip or turn-in toward the ball and when you do your club face will be square to the ball. your thoughts

  15. I really wish I can get a personal (on-site) lesson from Jonathan. Have learned so much from Jonathan!

  16. You know more about golf than I will ever know, but I know about teaching and I have to say you spend a good deal of time showing us how to swing the wrong way.

  17. This has been one of my biggest flaws. And my coach showed me I was holding through impact without the release. After releasing, I was finally able to make draws instead of my fades

  18. Great video. Thank you. I tend to keep decent wrist angles at impact — lead wrist still a bit bowed and trail wrist still bent back with palm coming down towards ball. I think I am over rotating the forearms. Most balls start just on target line or show a slight pull with a tiny draw. Drives me crazy, but I cannot resolve this issue. Any general ideas I've tried to weaken my grip and then I lose quality contact. Again, thank you.

  19. Great stuff. Be great if you could go over enhancing distance for more senior and/or physically limited swings ie) unable to hip turn much during backswing as well as a much-abbreviated backswing (below shoulder level).

  20. Hi Jonathan, this is great. however i start shanking the ball. When i try miss the ball on the inside i really pure it with compression. Is the turning over sticking the golf club out causing it to hit the hozel?

  21. I hit the ball fairly straight but I do early release and I don't get the distance out of my irons like I should

  22. Great video Kim-Moss. Could you kindly give us a refresher video on the grip you personally use. Whether to do a long thumb or short thumb

  23. My to go to instructional video in learning the correct way of driving golf balls. Thank you.
