Ball Striking! That would be my answer if asked how could golfers dramatically improve their scores and enjoyment
Ball striking is probably the number one skill that can help you lower your scores and enjoy the game more, but how do you take something which can be incredibly inconsistent and turn it into a strength?
You work on this key ball striking move! Nobody talks about this important part of the puzzle but it could be the one thing you need to start striking the golf ball like the pro’s, and ive seen it happen

Forget the naysayers but thankful for them because that's why you made this video.
This whole concept lead to a big improvement in my swing when I discovered it last year. Went away from it because I'm a constant tinkerer but in some ways elements of it are still in my swing.
This concept also breaks down how getting hips open is not simply trying to open them as fast as possible. The club arms etc need to be in sync with the pivot. Get the hands down to the right leg then you can almost turn that hip up and "open" as fast as you want by standing up on the left leg.
Great video! Exactly the move I have been trying to replicate as my good hits have that lower than address grip feel on my downswing. I "stay in my seat" and feel the grip dropping then turn my left side and feel that C at impact. Fantastic video.
I love this stuff. People have been saying "the golf swing is not a base ball swing" since before I was alive! And YET, it is so similar that the argument is losing ground. Technique, yes, different but length of bat, yes, different but the mechanics the theory (small mouth) the same. The most speed generated is from pulling the bat away from the ball. Anyways, thanks for your content. You have helped me a bunch these last couple of weeks!
Good tip
This has not been highlighted prior to your vlogs Chris. Extremely interesting & effective form of extra power. 👍
I think your videos are informative and easy to move to your practice sessions, there is no need to be negative and say nobody would do that, if you are able to dissect someone’s golf swing that much you obviously are already a pro or on tour so please post your videos so we can be as good.
I saw a CR vid with this wrist hinge change a few months ago & when I used it I got an instant speed and distance gain. From 130 / 140yds with 7iron I now usually hit 160/170yds and hope to be around 180 as my flow, tempo and rotation develops. There seems to be only a few other golf pro's highlighting this and the best example I saw referred to this as the "hitchiker" move – the thumb on the lead hand points up in the back swing (palm facing behind) and ends up pointing up after follow through (palm facing forward).
Takes a professional eye to break down the mechanics of the golf swing and you sir know what you are talking about!
I'd say that the haters who think this isn't the way were the type of golfers who go to the range, pull the driver out straight away and hit 100 balls with it then leave having accomplished nothing.
Basically.. they're clueless.
First time it's been explained so explicitly for me. I think is one key element that I've been missing while re-tooling my swing. It should lead to greater club head speed as per your demonstration at the beginning of the video. Thank you!
The concept that the handle must move from a lower position, and then move up is not new, so I don't know why so many people were objecting to this. I have seen it demonstrated with other YouTube instructors (like Russell Heritage), and it is essential for good ball striking and improved club head speed. Thanks for the video.
totally in relation with your video on the "under water drill" which was for me the missing link to improve my ball stricking…and if before the stricking hands are returning lower than the original position, it is almost impossible to come from over the top. Thank you so much Chris, again highly pedagogical stuff here!!
I am sorry that so many of your Tik Rok followers do not know about the golf swing. I can think of 2 or 3 You Tube coaches who promote the move you discuss (i.e. Steve Pratt and Danny Maude). I am aware of this move but have trouble consistently applying it, but your explanation has provided some hints that may help me. Thanks.
Your Demonstration is correct and reflects the law of parametric acceleration.
The simplest way to feel the principle of what your doing is to spin something around the end of your finger…or a rope in your hand…and how you keep it going or move it faster.
You can't beat physics👍
Every golfer should be taught what impact looks like and then work backwards. Once you know, everything else makes sense. Most people are scratching around thinking the ball is the target and that everything needs to be in line at the ball, hence they stand up. If they don't stand up they hit the ground.
Brilliant 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼⛳️
Great explanation! I am always amazed at when i do a practice swing where i'm trying really hard to stay down, how i can almost always miss the ground, but this explains it, thanks!
Can see why people were mad. Regular golfers are not world class athletes lol. We just want to hit the ball straight. Doesn't matter how we do it
Do you do this same movement for driver too?
Ignore the TikTok haters – sadly too many people who get off being negative in the world – your content is great – keep it coming 👍
The difference (for me) between doing what you say in this video is 135 yard 7-iron (without doing it) and a 160 yard 7-iron (by doing it). It fixes early extension too as you point out. Thanks for explaining the concept so well.
Great tip Chris, so many experts, don't know why they watch these videos.
Please also tell us where is the point around which the shaft pivots – little finger of lead hand / where fingers of the 2 hands meet? Or somewhere else?
Chris, you don't know what your'e talking about…only kidding of course. Love the tutorial, you are the master of golf drills and analogies.
Very well explained
Well explain
It is always a pleasure to listen to Chris speak. If he ever gets tired of teaching golf, he can always teach public speaking, I am sure. He's a very smart guy who knows golf and knows how to communicate. His videos are always informative and he makes every word count — never any empty babbling from this man.
Since I have learned so much about the game of golf from his videos, I felt I had to take a brief moment to recommend Chris Ryan to anyone not familiar with his videos.
That's all.
I have looked carefully at the swings ofJessica Korda, Tommy Fleetwood. and Xander Schauffele. At no time do these players lower their hands in the downswing to a point lower than where they are at address. It is true that after the hands pass the impact or address position , the hands rise while the club descends. This action virtually guarantees that you will have a great hip rotation and weight shift on the forwards foot.
Chris all those people that said you're wrong and it doesn't happen, can I have some of their names so I can check how they're going in the Masters this week 😃.
Who, in their right mind, could deny that this is what is happening during a proper swing?
i havent played for 12 years and started 4 weeks ago again. watched hours of youtube videos and hours at the range. couldnt hit my irons at all until i stumbled onto Chris's channel. saw the one where he pulled the club on the ground by the handle. it changed everything. tx Chris. i owe you.
Are you saying that it is the rotation of the body from hands parallel with ground that projects the ball? Do the arms not swing as well?
Hi Chris I for one would have believed you. I believe it is called something like parabolic acceleration: Great vidieo
Very nice Chris, great lesson
Easy to understand. But not easy to do. Lol
Solid advice for solid impact 👍
One of your best videos, and you are spot on! From an engineering perspective it’s called parametric acceleration. The negative comments probably come from people not understanding gravity, centrifugal and centripetal forces in the golf swing. Players need to understand the importance of stance and posture along with no tension to allow this acceleration and these forces to happen in the golf swing. Love your content!
Great video Chris. One question…to over exaggerate this drill I suppose it would be most logical to get the hands super low at the point of the right thigh (as opposed to moving around the hand low point [ie, lowest hands before the right thigh])?
This is what pro's mean by "using the ground".
It's called Parametric Acceleration and yes "all the best do it"
