Oh are we talking leafs
Im gonna say this. I dont think players really quit on the coach, but maybe silence out the coach, as I seen 2 completely different defensive structures before the trade deadline and after the deadline. Before the deadline, I saw man-to-man defense and it flopped heavily with too many mistakes. After the deadline, I was seeing a lot more zone defense which did a lot better, and much cleaner. Just seeing that, I dont think the players really quit on the coach, but I do see the players give up on the coach's structure and went to a different system than the coach's. On the flip side, it looks really bad on DJ Smith if the players go against the system of the coach to the degree he is useless behind the bench, and all DJ really had to do was organize which lines go on the ice, and when we see as many too many men calls against them, he's not even good at that cause that tells me that it is disorganized even at that. Does DJ deserve a shot next season, no. I really don't. This was the season to evaluate the coaching staff at the first 25 games, and he failed horribly, to the degree this team never was really recovered, and the ONLY reason they were even in the mix is because Florida, Buffalo, New York Islanders, and Pittsburgh never snagged the playoff spots when someone should have. This team had the absolute best schedule from October to December with no back-to-backs and a lot of home games with a good mix of teams they should beat, and they went 6-12. Say what you want about the last 30 games as far as the schedule, but the first 30..this team should have been right up there with at least the #2 wildcard spot, or even 1st wildcard spot, but they were playing not to be a basement team, and if the only excuse you have is that Norris alone was the reason due to the injury, you have a serious problem, and a lot of that falls on the coaching staff and management, especially when you had owners who decide to sell the team 6 games into the season. Jacques Martin, whom you know how he was Jason, worked with less and got the most out of what he had to the degree this team got into the playoffs with Ron Tugnutt as the starter, who was a backup his entire career. DJ has a lot more talent to work with and this is what we have. Im sorry but DJ does not deserve another season behind the bench, but we know he will be because he has 1yr left before the club option, and there will be an extra $5M in cap space after next season to play with, so Im going with DJ will be behind the bench and he has up to the trade deadline MAX to prove he can get this team into the playoffs, and if this team even sniffs not being in the playoffs, Dorion fires him, but you never know if the new owners have a coach lined up when they finally buy this team, which to me is the only way I see DJ fired before the start of next season. We have also seen during Dj's run, how many players have come into the system and not want to play for this team. Way too many, and Debrincat could just be another name on that long list that doesnt want to stay under this coaching staff. That second line was completely abysmal and Im not blaming Batherson, Debrincat, or Pinto themselves, but that falls on coaching and management as that line desperately needed not only a left handed shot, but needed a power-forward down the middle, like a Mike Fisher, to fill that role and had a big chance to get a player like Pierre-Luc Dubois, who could have filled that role very well, and never went for him. That second line, and even the third line, would have looked much better with Dubois on the second line, and putting Pinto back with Motte and Joseph, who should have never split up as they were on fire before the Norris injury. DJ should have easily plugged in Brassard on that second line and keep the third line intact. That falls on DJ and was the worst move DJ made was split the third line. After seeing how good Stutzle was on the PK, if Dorion did have Dubois, how good would the lines have looked with Tkachuk – Stutzle – Batherson and Debrincat – Dubois – Giroux. As good as Giroux has been with the top line, pairing Debrincat and Batherson never worked at all and that should have fixed quickly, but never was, and in the end, this team was one of the worst at 5 on 5, and thats on DJ. Im sorry but it is. He had more than enough time to fix the lines, and he never did.
I think the senators will benefit from a fresh outlook behind the bench. We certainly haven't accomplished enough to not have this conversation.
