Dell Match Play in Austin is officially dead. π Jordan Uppleger, vice president and executive director of PGA Tour championship management, made the announcement to the media on Monday at the Austin Country Club, which is nearly fully prepped and ready to host the final match play event March 22 – 26, 2023.
The PGA Tour is rumored to have not been able to reach an agreement with the Austin Country Club to continue hosting the only match play event on the PGA Tour’s schedule, and separately, it is rumored Dell Technologies wanted to pay less for their sponsorship of the event given many of the top 64 players in the world, many having been mainstays at the Dell Match Play, are no longer eligible to play PGA Tour events because they are competing in the rival golf league, @LIVGolf – LIV Golf causes the death of Dell Match Play and the Wolrd Golf Championships altogether.

Bummer. Your volunteer work sounds fun. Really fun. LIV is making an impact. And I for one think that, overall, it will be a positive impact for both the players and the fans in the long run. More competition is always better for the fans and players. For the tour, maybe not so much. But the tour got greedy.
LIV Golf needs to come to Austin.
Iβm still reeling about the pga turning the events with the most tradition into no cut limited field eventsβ¦ and now this truly is crushing news for someone whom for years has been yapping the pga tour needs a lot more match play. Instead we get no match play.
I absolutely always loved this event. I could care less whom made it to the final. But I loved how it started with an international field like itβs mortal Kombat or something. I always believe the compelling nature of match play always more than makes up for only 2-4 players being on course (although I always argued this event needed two more consolation matches so there would be 8 players on course Sunday competing for big bucks and points in all those silly lists.
Change is hard but this all seems so unnecessary if people just picked up their phone and worked something out.
