When faced with a bunker shot, most golfers have zero idea how to execute a proper golf swing in a sand trap.

A great tip many PGA Tour pros and experienced golfers pass on to novices requires the shot to be taken as if it were on a tee.

Provided that a good setup has been established with the golf ball under our front shoulder and a widened stance, we take a three quarter golf swing, while holding our stance throughout beyond impact.

The best golf swing to execute an effective bunker shot requires a tall stance on the shot, avoiding downward motion, controlling our angle of attack through the point of impact.

Many golfers have found success hitting their way out of the sand trap through directing the loft of their shot towards the intended target.

Approaching their address with an open clubface, golfers are encouraged to grip their club lower, with the goal of a flattened shaft that maintains the aim of their clubface through the entire swing.

When working to free the ball from sand traps, golfers sometimes hit too far behind the ball, often botching the shot on their upswing.

By slightly bending their left leg, a golfer can then maintain posture through the entire golf swing, while positioning their low point of the swing on the front portion of their stance.

Golf instructors and coaches often encourage their players to develop more than one bunker strategy, as the variance in distance to the hole often means adjustments must be made to their established sand trap game.

With the goal of controlling distance, golfers must set up a soft shot, taken higher than they normally would. This contributes to a shortened follow through that still provides the needed speed to rip through the sand. Stopping short before impact would result in a poorly composed shot.

Favoring their lead foot, most golfers find success playing this shot slightly ahead of their normal golf stance. Adding needed loft to the shot comes through opening the clubface, which also benefits from the additional bounce a sand wedge provides the golf ball.
