THE TRUTH – SOUTHAMPTON – BOLTON – WIGAN – BURY – BLACKPOOL By David Lee

Today we have david lee, in with us Lee, a right winger, began his career with Bury in 1986. In five years at Gigg Lane, he made just over 200 league appearances and scored 35 goals.

Southampton came in for his services in 1991 with a successful £350,000 bid. Lee’s stay on the south coast was short-lived, however; after only twenty appearances he returned to the north-west with Bolton Wanderers in a one-month loan deal. In December 1992, Bolton made the move permanent in a £275,000 deal.[2]

Lee remained at Burnden Park for five years, clocking up 147 appearances and scoring sixteen goals. Whilst at Bolton he played in the 1995 League Cup Final.

In 1997, he joined Wigan Athletic for £250,000, and he maintained his goalscoring touch, netting eleven goals during his three years with the Latics. Whilst at Wigan he played in the final as a substitute as they won the 1998–99 Football League Trophy.[3]

Lee joined Blackpool on loan in 1999, before making a permanent move to Carlisle United on a non-contract basis.

A year later, the midfielder joined non-league side Morecambe, with whom he finished his career.

If I could pick a shirt it would be the commemorative from the Papa Johns final….I would give it to my son who flew from Denmark to watch such an epic final.

  6. Thanks guys for a great interview. David comes across as a very unassuming nice bloke. I remember, as an opposing fan, he was the type of player you loved to watch but at the same time he'd proper give you the willies because you knew one burst of that pace and you were done for.

    I'd like a Wednesday shirt.

  7. I was in the main stand with my late dad and still remember saying to him early on at 0.0 that unless they tie that little Lee up were in trouble, I still couldn't understand how souness couldn't identify what I was seeing as he was just in front of me so seeing it at the same angles, the rest is history and he absolutely destroyed us that night, I'd played with Tony Kelly and knew how good he was, Jan Molby qualities and was on it that night, well played David.

  10. Absolutely loved David Lee down at Gigg lane , rapid winger and skinned everyone he played . David scored a goal playing for Bury I have never forgotten ….he was bombing down the right wing in front of the Main stand towards the "Manny rd" end he suddenly cut inside towards the penalty box and with his "swinger" left foot curled a shot into the top left hand corner of the net …. what a cracker ! and what a lovely fella and a great career . Good luck David with your business. Oh I would have loved a Bury shirt !
