Ladies, this is the D&D enemy called Wraiths. Wraiths are an Irish-themed monster that can not just take HP, but with it's special attack, reduce a PC's Strength score. If a Strength score reaches 0, that PC dies.
By the way, if either of you are familiar with The Last of Us, the video game, Ashley Johnson played Ellie — while Laura Bailey played Abby in The Last of Us 2.
And Paula, you got part of Pike and Grog's backstory. The story goes that Grog's uncle Kevdak was leading a party of the Herd of Storms, Grog's clan. They came upon Wilhand, Pike's grandfather. Kevdak, the d-bag that he is, told Grog to kill him. Grog refused. So Kevdak basically beat the life out of Grog, and Grog nearly died. In that fracas, Wilhand escaped back to Westrun, where he lived with Pike. After hearing about Grog, Pike went looking for him, and found him nearly dead — unconscious and dying. Pike saved him, because Grog saved her grandfather. Realizing he had nowhere to go, as he had been outcast from the Herd of Storms, Pike offered to let Grog live with her and Wilhand. At that point, Pike had black hair like Scanlan. After joining up with the rest of Vox Machina, there was an early fight in which Pike died and came back — which is when her hair was changed from black to white. If not for Grog rushing her to a temple, Pike would have permanently died. So Grog returned the favor of Pike saving him, by saving her in return.
It's why Grog and Pike have this "Big Brother-Little Sister" vibe — and it's one reason why I love the two characters so much.

Grey Griffin's (Delilah) delivery of her spellcasting lines is fantastic.
A lot of people have the misconception that Pike and Grog grew up together. Not exactly true. Grog was around teenage years (Grog can't count so he doesn't know how old he was, just that he wasn't full size yet) when he went against his own herd (tribe) to save Pike's great grandfather Wilhand. Grog was nearly beaten to death and then left for dead. So Wilhand got Pike to save him and then they took him into their home. But Pike was an adult at that point.
Did you notice that the Briarwoods always attack Pike first?
That's because clerics have spells that are especially effective against the undead, including vampires like Lord Briarwood, or the undead creatures lady Briarwood can summon. This is also why it's especially bad to lose the cleric during this particular campaign.
I just watched this episode, it was pretty "meh" just like this series so far (not the reaction just the animated series) I reserve final judgement of Critical Role until I finish watching the campaign if I ever do.

That's why any project she's done since getting married credits her as Grey Griffin and any project she did prior to getting married credits her as Grey DeLisle.
