RTÉ Rugby podcast: Leinster’s dominance, Murphy retirement and Ireland’s wooden spoon battle

Neil Treacy is joined by Fiona Coghlan and Bernard Jackman to look back on the main talking points of the week in rugby.

We break down Leinster’s 30-15 win against Ulster in the last 16 of the Heineken Champions cup, and discuss the knock-on effect of their dominance for Irish rugby.

The panel also examine Munster and Connacht’s heavy defeats, while we also go back over Ireland’s 53-3 defeat to France in the TikTok Women’s Six Nations.

  1. Keep Baird developing as a 6, bring McCarthy through and Leinster have the genuine size to compete with the monster French and South African sides up front. Next season could easily see a fully homegrown pack that looks something like:
    Porter, Sheehan, Furlong
    Ryan, McCarthy
    Baird, Doris, Van der Flier

  2. In the 2000s, when Leinster were struggling to reach quarter finals of the Heineken Cup, I worked in a Dublin suburban village. The local convenience shop-owner's son was studying sport science. He was getting part time work with Leinster coaching kids in schools and clubs, meanwhile Munster were winning everything but spending their money on the vanity project that is Thomond Park. That theme of squandering resources continues with John Ryan playing in New Zealand and Jenkins in Leinster.
