  1. both Lloyd and Bartel were star players. I think the clubs would be treating them very differently to your Max Rookes…

  2. Or….maybe…when drafted you are presented your first contract and claus 1A reads ' you understand the risks with head knocks and accept them with no culpability to clubs or the AFL'

  3. To dismiss this case as a cash grab is the wrong way to look at the situation. Have had football concussions myself and can relate to them being debilitating and understand how they can ruin lives.

It is not out of the question that doctors 10 years ago did not treat concussions with the same concern they do now.

If players feel they have been wronged and their lives are now in turmoil because of this then they should be eligible for compensation.

Who are you to dismiss these peoples lives and serious claims as pure money grabs. Get some perspective and have some respect.

  4. What are they running interference for the AFL? all the money in football and they're trying to save a few bucks. This issue is one of "better to be safe than sorry, better to err on the side of caution, unless they took up boxing or something after football then it's gonna be that it was the football that did it, so just assume it was the football and win yourself some goodwill.

  5. Imagine getting thousands of dollars of free money because u can say “I got concussed” World is a joke. The rich get richer

  6. Just out a clause in a contract when u sign a contract it says “footy is a contact sport so if u get concussed too bad. Sign if u agree or bye bye”

  7. I recall Max Rooke saying he would love a chance to play NRL. Some players play a rugged style that increases the risks. It's like a race car driver complaining when he loses his legs in a wreck. Will be interesting to see how a judge sees it.

  8. Ex-players with no medical issues aren't going to bad mouth their club Drs, really no point asking them. Would take 10mins to find some times of Bartel being sent out after a head knock without full checks & not looking great

  9. You're probably not Gunna get knocked out playing soccer, tennis or volleyball. AFL? It's not if but when you're gonna get smashed.. it's the nature of the beast.

  10. Rugby, ice hockey, lacross, wrestling, afl, boxing, martial arts… class actions brought against leagues to prevent contact will be interesting. Fifty shades of netball anyone?

  11. This is an interesting situation for professional players. But what about grass roots and above players? Should helmets be mandatory to help reduce the impact?

  12. Of course Footy Classified and Nine are making it at as a cash grab. I think it's pretty simple, they were injured at their workplace and as a result of those injuries it has affected their lives and so they should be compensated. If this happened at a Construction site I don't (and hope not) that people would see it as a cash grab.

  13. Long as you don't think it was leaking down out of your brain mate think the blood coming up would be more to do with the impact made to your body not your head you did not prepare if you look closely he prepares for impact you do not and it is your clash of heads that was hard and his shoulder impact to your torso i believe that you may of had a punctured lung maybe but the head impact was quite severe

  14. It's a contact sport, that's why a player can earn more in a year than most of us make in our lives. Risk/reward

  15. The only way to stop is make the sport no contact thats just how it works you can't stop energy in motion being dispersed onto the objects it collides with any other way. Maybe the players should wear sumo suits

  16. Lol, we’ve all seen, with our own eyes, folks running back on the field when we kno they shouldn’t. We have all seen it.
Loydy should probs be sued for koing sewel with a cast.

  17. I quit footy in my mid teens in the 90s because I didn’t want my body getting smashed every week. I knew the risks.

  18. Next we will hear Australian superbike racers taking their teams to court due to race crashes . Surely some of the blame has to fall at the feet of the players themselves as much as the teams or the league

  19. It’s not complicated LOVEEEEEEE. You play footy expect to get hit . You take the $ you take the risk.

  20. Great conversation, but there is irony in this topic. The AFL is trying to protect the head and avoid concussions but introduce a new rule. No sliding in to the ball.
Okay, so now two players go head 1st into picking up the ball!
    What clowns.

  21. Rooke runs straight into Selwood and actually concusses himself 😂. Rooke doesn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. Scammer

  22. medical assistance should never be denied for an afl or former afl/vfl footballer regarding concussions. compensation payouts ?

  23. Eddy is sooo full of sh-t. Of course the AFL don't care about player safety as evidenced by the continued shoulder hits to an opponent's head. Has a week or two suspension deterred the likes of Buddy Franklin from purposely taking out an opponent? Not at all: he still does it. A fine of $1,500 to a wealthy player is tantamount to about $50 to the average person.

I wish someone would publish the statistic of what percentage of excessively rough hits are by indiginous players: for a minority, they constitute the majority of infingements. Has anybody seen an indiginous player slam another into the ground?

  24. I never went out on the field hoping the club was responsible if i got hurt. I chose to play. I was not made to play by a club or league.

  25. Bartel was a far better player then Rooke so the Club probably looked after him a lot better

  26. Matthew Lloyd hit the nail right on the head. The majority of these players while they were playing didn't manage their money well.
Or do anything else while playing football to set themselves up for the future. And are now just seeing this as a money grab.
Bartel played his last game in 2016. Lloyd played his last game in 2009. Both well known to go hard at the ball.

Both have just said the DR's treated them with the utmost care. ALL Players knew of the risks when signing up to play Professional AFL Football.

So, in any court case on that should be nulled. Head knocks & concussion unfortunately is part of the game. So, to "Blame" which is what this class action is really all about.

So, who is the class action blaming?? Can't be the AFL. The DR's ? The Clubs ? The Coaching staff ?

  27. Once again the effect on grassroots footy and the fans are not mentioned because it is a facet ex-players, game commentators, and any other higher-ups simply don't see and thus don't care. Every cent lost from the AFL through litigation is not coming from executive or player salaries… it is getting taken from local footy funding plain and simple.

  28. Soft as diohrea, look at the hit on Brett Montgomery from Brodie Holland, you don't see Brett complaining

  29. As sorry as i feel for these blokes, they played knowing that they could be injured. They were well compensated- in later years- and that's it. If this opens the flood gates it will mean the end of contact sports

  30. "they wouldnt have let me play the 2nd week". Mate 2 weeks after your brain was bashed and you vommited blood for 2 days seems like you should have had a lot more then 2 weeks off :O

  31. It's a contact sport with very few helmets utilised. What do they expect to happen, and I am speaking about the players themselves. They play, they know the dangers, so for mine, this concussion crap is just that.
And the AFL, and any sporting organisation, MUST ensure that each new player coming into the game, signs on the dotted line that they know they are playing a contact sport, and may be injured, including of course concussion, and if they don't sign they don't get to play. Actually, make this mandatory for any league out there. Including juniors.

  32. The rules on Class Actions suggest the only winners on this will be the lawyers. If the players see 40% to divide up, I’ll be surprised.

  33. Look, shes a ambulance chaser. People colliding isnt a reason to take the bump. Lets play no touchey netball
