Where can you find info on bend profiles and balance point of all the shafts?
I think the Mizuno DNA shaft fitter is the coolest thing … just go to the shop swing a few times and out comes the three shafts best for you.
Really interesting, thanks for going over it.
I just got fitted for irons at club champion. I love your in depth expertise. After spending $2,000 I'm a little scared that my fitter doesn't have the level of expertise that you have. The clubs have not been knocking me over so far.
Was just in there fitting for shafts specifically. Was very eye opening about what works best and how weight, flex etc was so different in my current heads. Paul was great through that process.
You are the elon musk (genius)of shaft knowledge.
brilliant video. thanks guys.
Great video. Next level to this would be going through every shaft on the wall and separating them into; stiffness, balance point, and profile. It’s hard to know since there isn’t a universal way to measure shafts based on those 3 factors. I know EI profiles are the closest thing, but even those are more of a guideline than exact data.
Probably too difficult to put into one video, but would love to see a complete breakdown of the everything out there.
So what graphite shafts do you guys like and why, and who are these shafts for?? Need more info on iron graphite shafts for us older better player guys.
I'm getting an iron fitting from Club Champion in two days, so this was pretty good timing to releasee this video
I was surprised at the swing speed recommendations for various stiffnesses. Most of the shaft OEMs would say that a swing speed in the 80’s with a 6 or 7 iron would put most golfers into the S category. Not so, according to Ian.
How do you guys rate Mizuno shaft optimizer as far as accuracy?
Thanks for this great vid
Ian was soooooooooo engaged on this video!! 11 out of 10. Not that he is ever not engaged…but this one was kinda special. Great video lads!
What I have found is when you use a lighter weight shaft the weight of the club decreases but the swing weight increases. Is this correct?
I hope TXG Toronto is this thorough 🤞
Such a well done informative walk through. Thank you! It’s a dream of mine to get in for a TXG fitting.
I would love to see a video about fixing certain misses. Example: I am a decent player but recently I have developed a serious issue with chunking irons , particularly in the wedges and short irons. Once that starts it bleeds into the rest of my bag and I’m in trouble. I’ve been working on my grip and my mid/long irons are flying really nice for the most part but I’m now loosing drives with a cut/slice a lot of the time. I know that’s a very broad statement but a video on a way to fix those tendencies would be awesome. Maybe a quick clip about proper grip and take away. A video about stance and weight distribution. When I play my best my misses are on the thin side, my worst is when I start seeing fat shots. I would love a video to address relatively simple ways to try and combat issues like that. Shooting a 78 one day and a 90 the next week is maddening to say the least.
KBS shaft player here in both irons and wedges. Very smooth feeling shafts.
These guys also make a very good point in emphasizing the importance of higher-balanced shafts vs lower-balanced shafts.
Shaft length is also very important.
Don't settle on using clubs that are too short if you're a taller person.
Get fitted for the correct length, shaft weight, and stiffness.
Wish I had seen this before. I have been to many manufacture based 'fittings' and all they did was recommend their standard shafts and no options were given (too hard?). You guys have the best approach, (totally independent). The only place I could find near here that had 'fitters' jad them all specialists in one brand or two. – the Titleist fitter recommended their brand and the Ping fitter the same – guess what so did the Taylormade. After all that I asked the manager (big place) if there was any 'independent' fitters – and he looked at me like I had 2 heads. If someone did what you did in Australia they would do very well – but the Aust PGA would probably shut them down. Wish I lived near you in UK. PS – I ended up with Ping as their fitting process was far more comprehensive.
Love the channel and love the videos… HATE that anytime I go talk with any other fitter or golf retail associate I feel like I’m talking to a simpleton because I know that someone like Ian can provide so much more. I honest to goodness don’t feel I can trust anyone in the golf retail world that I ever talk to anymore.
Love the Cabot swag. What a course!

You truly are the master……
When you buy a set of irons off the rack just by swinging the clubs that the buyer of that golf shop chose for this year’s clubs, you are doing yourself a disservice. Some buyer does not have your best interest at heart. Try to get fit with shafts that have the fit and feel of what you are trying to achieve with your swing and your speed. Never let your ego get in the way of your choice of shaft- if things work best with a regular shaft, never go to an extra stiff just because that’s what you buddies use.
Fantastic! This was amazing!!
Can you do a Q&A where we can ask questions? Great video, you answered many of my questions, but. look, I have more…… How do we find the balance point of a shaft? It does not seem to be a variable the manufacturers identify or something that can be determined by looking at a shaft profile graft. My irons have variable weight heads. 4-iron is 250g and PW is 294. How does this fit into the shaft selection? I hope you do more of this. And, I have to say, I have tried many other YouTube stations and, literally, no one is as captivating as you two. Please keep up the great work. Much appreciated.
WOW! That was an excellent video!!!
first time building my iron set from scratch..used miura tc101s, dg 105 s200 & golf pride z-cord grips..4i-PW set from D1 to around D2.5/3 progressively..is it just about right is it? sorry but no access to a fitter nearby our place
The average score is 100. Doesn't matter what shaft someone has when they can't find the center of the face. Spend your money on lessons, not aftermarket shafts.
This info only helps in real life for real average players (it off course helps theoreticaly thanks) if you know what component holds what characteristics and what combinations are needed for your specific swing and fysical shape. As they say a little knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge at all. The chance you get along fine with a basic brand option is much better than tinkering with few alternatives you or most fitters (not that good) do not know the specifics off. It is even questionable if your fitter or golfshop has enough options to try out to have a real choice. Hardly ever more than a few, maybe 5-6 or so per clubbrand in different versions are available. There are just too many brands, product lines, options and combinations available for most shops/fitters. Also a fitting bay is a snapshot in time that hardly ever if ever (except really good players) translates into real life playing on course. I know this for a fact as we sometimes take a R10 on course to look at swing numbers and compare it with the trackman data. There is a difference and its not consistent. For many reasons. We are no machines. Even the best of us amateurs. Anyway. Nice one but finding the best is kinda like how to build a rocket with a youtube manual. It can be done but only by a few wizzards. Guess most of us have to settle for ok.
Excellent stuff boys. Really well explained. Thank you.
This is great content guys. I’ve spoke to Joel in Glasgow so I’m going to get booked in very soon and get my irons/shafts once and for all.
Keep up the good work. 🤙
Playing the DG Pro X100s they’re perfect for me love the extra height on my 4 iron and lower on my PW. I think more people need to give flighted sets a try
Excellent…thank you! Most of us have been fitted using that Mizuno iron shaft analyzer gizmo. It feels like that’s an easy button for 90% of fitters in my experience. What are your thoughts on that device?
Systematic, honest, reliable… TXG in a nutshell 🙌 Great video chaps 🍻
Love the technical videos!
People used to wack balls around with bamboo shafts…and now here we are! It's really mind blowing! Awesome vid as usual!
I’ve been curious for about a year now, but where does the LZ fit into this? As I was fit by the wizard into them, it was never on my radar, but I love them.
This, 12 tips for a driver fitting, and the “what driver loft should you play” videos are the three greatest videos and the reason you’re a different and elevated channel.
Just started playing muiras and the swing weight is d4. This video came along at the perfect time! Going to buy some midsize grips now!
This is one of the best videos you guys have put out. For years I’ve heard about tempo and load and could never truly understand what each meant and how they married up with shafts in a fitting. Thank you for providing such a simple and clear overview
just got fitted into mizunos, 7 iron 98.7 SS carry of 195 average, I got put into nippon 120S should I have been X instead?
1. Heavier shaft weight for plane changers to manage the over the top/more awareness of swing plane?
2. Very interested in ascending weight shafts, but what are the practicalities of testing this during a fitting when most fitting happens on 6 iron? Throw in combo sets like Mizuno JPX923 and it becomes a bit complicated as the 6 is going to feel and perform very different than a 9 iron! Haha
The viewers should acknowledge the value of all this essential shaft fit information in this video. Indeed a life time knowledge summarized. Thanks again guys!
Just bought some 223’s. with Project x io 6.0’s.
Never really noticed my preference on feel in the handle before. Might be an expensive lesson learned
