Payne Stewart | First and Last | The Open Championship

Payne Stewart was an exciting young golfer who was always well-watched by fans all over the world, not only because of his bold plus fours but his undeniable golfing talent.

The American made his maiden Open Championship appearance in 1981 at Royal St George’s for The 91st Open Championship – finishing tied 58th overall.

At two Open Championships (1990 & 1995) Stewart finished runner-up, being bested by Sandy Lyle and Nick Faldo, respectively.

The three-time major winner would make his last appearance at The 128th Open at Carnoustie Golf Links in 1999.

Mere months later, Payne Stewart would tragically die in a plane crash, aged just 42. We remember a great man on and off the course with this edition of ‘First and Last’.

  1. I’m not a great fan of US golf. The stereotypical look but Payne was definitely from a different mould. Sorely missed!
