Sanderson is a beast, I really hope he wins the Calder, but sadly, the way voting works he probably won't.. he'll probably win a couple Norris trophies though before his career is over
The Calder would be nice for Sanderson but he plays in Ottawa in a small market with not too many people who actually do the voting . He is a good player for his age and will only get better . The great ones will always shine more than an award or a trophy .
The Calder voters only care about forwards that put up points. Unfortunately
Sanderson will be on the long list of current and former Ottawa Senators who don't get the league-wide recognition they deserve until many years have passed. Small market team in the regional shadow of both Toronto and Montreal where players are routinely over-hyped.
This is going to be similar to 2015 when Aaron Ekblad won the Calder despite Mark Stone having 64 points, lead the entire league in takeaways, was +21, and most of his points were even-strength. So why didn't he win? He played in Ottawa, he was a bit older than the other rookies, and he doesn't play a flashy game. Sanderson has 2 out of 3 of those traits: plays in Ottawa, isn't a flashy player. Sanderson won't get league-wide recognition until the Sens go deep in the playoffs.
The Calder means nothing. It's a glorified popularity contest and not the best rookie. Hope he doesn't win as it will make signing him more expensive. Pinto is also considered a rookie is he not? Anyways it's not a important award. Sanderson is already our number one defenseman. Hope he catches power for

I dont think the Sens were supposed to win Mando's or Ferguson's first games. The Sens season was supposed to be over when Forsberg got injured. I think Merilainen starting gives them a good chance to win it, he is the shutout king after all.
As a Sens fan, I appreciate watching a show with unabashed homers. I love hearing these guys pick Sanderson for the Calder. Watching Sportsnet broadcasts, we'd probably get Garry Galley explaining why Cole Perfetti has had a better rookie campaign than Sanderson.
