Will match play format actually be missed on the PGA Tour? | Golf Channel Podcast

The 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play closed the book (for now) on match play on the PGA Tour, and Rex Hoggard and Ryan Lavner got pretty heated while debating whether that’s a bad thing or not. #GolfChannel #GolfChannelPodcast #PGATour

  1. Love match play, but really hard and inefficient to cover on a TV broadcast

  2. Match play doesn't work in a world of golf that's ALL about the money. That is golf today, part of what's wrong with it. I miss the golf I grew up on. When players personality and background were on display as well as golf talent . When courses weren't ultra manicured, when the rub on green, was more like real life and effected everybody at some point in a round or several times in a week. When the LUCK of the draw decided when your Thur/Fri rounds would start. Wind blows hard in morning but not afternoon, etc. How the player handle THOSE issues was part of what was interesting to watch. To Rex's point match play is way too unpredictable to market it so the best ( highest ranked ) player always competes for the win. But to me THAT is what IS exciting. The underdog can win! Played on a HS Team 40 yrs ago and now I'm 65, but I play with all ages, two fine players at our club are 93 and play several times a week. If golf wasn't only about the $$ there would surely be room for one week a year for this format to work if only for us older purist and players of the game, remember if you only want the 20-50 crowd that makes the most $$ to be your only target audience and marketing focus of the pro tour, you miss the point of this great game. It's the only game that lets you play your whole life long.

  3. The matchplay is great and I will miss it. It was better this year because the course was gettable and there were loads of birdies and changes in matches as opposed to when Billy won I think with a +1 score in the final and it took 5 1/2 hours for the round.
Here is my suggestion for a revamp
1- two separate competitions but men and women on the same course at the same time. 32 men 32 women
2 – 4 days of play all knock out
3 – Thursday 16 men's and womens matches- alternate on the course, mens pair, womens pair next off tee etc.
4 – Friday 8 men and womens matches
5 – Saturday 4 men's and womens matches teeing off in the afternoon so we can get a Saturday morning game in and then come home to watch
6 – Sunday semi finals and finals plus consolation matches,

By combining and eliminating pools and using 32 it limits it to 4 days but still includes a 36 hole Sunday as traditional match play championships do and by including the women we get two storylines to follow. Plus pay the women the same money.
