The Genius Trick of Augusta National’s 12th Hole | The Game Plan | Golf Digest

Lurking beneath the beauty of Augusta’s iconic 12th Hole lies an ingenious trap that tests the limits of players’ discipline and smarts. Year after year, players see that Sunday pin on the far right side of the green. Every Masters, somebody tries to chase it and they pay the price. Which begs the question: What is the RIGHT way to play the 12th hole at Augusta National? What is…the Game Plan?

  1. Additionally, the slope on the right compounds the problem.
The water may be 20ft short of the putting surface, but any shot not landing on the green rolls back. It’s essentially ‘water to the edge of green’ as you play it.
    Excellent video.

  2. Didn't mention Tigers blow up in 2020 on this hole he shot like a 12 on it and missed the cut. He then got really drunk and crashed his car again.

  3. On Augusta's inception, and for many years after, they'd grow the grass up on that RF slope a substantial amount compared to the close shave it gets today. Wedge technology made it a simple pitch and a putt for par for everyone, the risk-reward wasn't as severe. Hence, the 'redesign' with bikini wax all over.

  4. More analysis of good course management. Who are the best course managers today, and how would they play it?

  5. Oh to have that chance to play the 12th at Augusta on Sunday. I guess I’d have to make myself 1 of the greatest golfers ever.

  6. I would play an iron shorter than normal and go straight 5 yards to the left of the pin. I would hit it hard and send it high to land softly. Don't spin the ball, straight, straight, straight!

  7. I've never played Augusta, but I did play a copy-cat course that had Amen Corner a bunch of times, and this hole is a lot more difficult than it looks. Mostly because of how short the green is. You've got to hit the perfect club or you wind up long or short, with a really difficult up and down.

  8. That makes Augusta (at least on this hole) a course for lefties !! Great video.

  9. So what’s difficult about it ? Play the % shot to the middle every time regardless of pin position but as in life it’s greed that is the ruination of all gamblers.

  10. One thing you showed but didn’t point out: Phil is left-handed, making his pattern overlay better with the green's shape, as it would be mirrored compared to the pattern shown for right handed players.

  11. Also, part of the reason righties aim left is that their fade misses will stay in the short bunker instead of rolling back into the water

  12. It’s a nightmare for a righty. Pulls/draws right carry long and pushes/fades come up short.

    Lefty’s have an advantage

  13. Ken Venturi said it best about the tee shot on #12 on Sunday:

“You can’t win the Masters with this shot, but you sure can lose it”

#12 is one of the greatest par 3 holes in golf, without question.

  14. Well, I’m lucky if I break 100 so my strategy is quite simple. Hit the ball toward the green and hope that I get lucky.
