Here’s a weird takeaway drill to loosen your arms in your golf swing. So many golfers I see are super tight as they take the club back. If your arms are tight going back how do you loosen then as you hit the ball? You won’t.
This means you will be purely using arm strength to hit the ball. This may feel good but you will loose distance and consistency if you keep hitting solely with your arms.
This weird drill really gives you a looser feeling in your takeaway so you can keep your arms loose as you swing back. It feels really strange when you first do this so don’t quit after 3 balls. Tee up a 7 iron and give me a bunch of balls. Preferably, 1 bucket. If so, you will see amazing shots and start to get the loose feeling I am after simple by doing this weird takeaway drill.

Awesome..I’m gonna implement this to my regular swing..Never used a static takeaway.. Always a little waggle with forward press to get things started kinda like Snead..Can’t wait to try it..
AKA…Bobby Jones….this was part of his swing…really works well to get to parallel…great tip!
I do this backswing for loose feeling…it’s a caddy drag!
Can you comment on 'pushing' the club back or 'pulling' the club back? If I pull the club, my shoulders don't turn and I trap my left arm across my body ( pops my shoulder out of the joint!!)
There you go again, focusing only on a "no arms" swing! What are you saying–that it's the most important thing for a golfer to learn? Oh, wait, it is!! Good job! I'm 84 years old and a better golfer today than I ever was–and it's all thanks to having found your teachings. Thank you!
Talk about serendipity… I've noticed in your videos how you always paint/drag the clubhead away in your backswing. I was hitting, I mean bodyswinging, some today and got that visual in my head and it produced the best swings. Loose wrists at top, loose wrists/snap thru impact. Can't wait to try this even more explicitly!
The old caddie drag, and it works great!
Just played Angel park a couple weeks ago
Doesn't this risk activating hands and urge to " hit " ?? I have veen working on starting swing with left shoulder
such a great teacher.. thanks PW
The whole point of loosen your arm is to force your body to do the rotation (because now your arm is powerless). A good Body rotation and with right swing sequence is how you can have consistent ball impact and good distance. and yes, this is a good drill, way to go Paul!
Awesome drill for us senior high handicappers. Thanks Paul
Very good video, for the range, I work at a golf course and see the same people as i call it " bang balls" every other day. When picking up baskets I watch and only a few do some kind of drill or alignment sticks or even hit to a exact yardage. All they're really doing is practicing bad habits. Thanks for the drill I'll give it a try.
All what is happening.. uncle Paul give us a real grounding.
I was working on my loose takeaway and just let the body swing faster. And let everything connect. Have to change my driver grip because made 1 extra wrap on thicker graphite shaft KBS. It makes me grip to hard.
I hit best my shots when I brush my club back. Helps you feel the whip effect on the transition and downswing.
This is a great tip Paul, thank you. I find my forearms very sore after a range session, and I was looking for a better swing thought to help me relax
This is so important. I get it. It’s fabulous. Thank you Paul. You’re the best
great tip since I am 76…hahahah
