Lee picking top in the 2nd made me think it was over. I couldn't believe he picked top. Nobody does that! What makes this so huge is that nobody has a record like Spencer. What, 75% of his matches end in the first round? There has probably never been a more dominant wrestler ever! Even with the loss… Then again, Spencer wasn't looking great on his feet so I have to wonder about his true health status….
Isn't Spencer Lee's Mom acting like a bad Little League parent? Shouldn't she learn to lose gracefully like her son did? I wouldn't want my kid's Mom acting like that.
I'm not an Iowa fan, because I root for Penn State and Cornell (my alum), but I think Spencer Lee should still win the Hodge.
I didn't see Lee losing, I saw Ramos have the second best performance of the tournament, first being Vito

Spencer Lee was a few seconds from taking the W, I don't think getting caught should be an upset, as it's always a possibility especially against a guy who had an 8-1 lead over Spencer in there first match.
RBY looking like a freshman and being dominated is a bigger shocker in my book. Vito speed was out of this world

I was in McGaw Hall at Northwestern University for the National Tournament in 1970 and watched the match between Gable and Owings. I saw Gables' reaction immediately afterwards under the bleachers. Not to diminish anything related to the Lee/Ramos match, but the loss and his reaction though somewhat different was every bit as dramatic given the circumstances.

If it wasnโt Ramos I was thinking of Pat glory taking him down. He was hurt and canโt wrestle as tough in the later rounds

Gable vs Owing !
I think this all comes down to match ups. Ramos was able to throw Spencer earlier this year and got near fall as well. Spencer stuck him in that match. Ramos did the same thing in the National tournament. Ramos didnโt look good to me in the final as he didnโt match up well. IMO, Spencer would have schooled Patrick Glory. Oh well that is why they donโt wrestle on paper. The mat and your execution during the match is the ultimate decider.
I think the match the next night was just as shocking, Arajau over RBY. Maybe not more shocking. They were both 3X champs going for 4 with over 50 win streaks.
Ramos had some amazing matches in rd 2 and 3 having to pull moves out of his but to win with time running out. He had an amazing run.

Everyone gets caught, but Lee had to have been hurt…really wanted to see that WPa homeboy do good. But Gable getting beaten was worse IMHO, because Gable was a lot healthier (he had only one bad knee and not two ACL replacements) and was undefeated.

The fall was understandable. It is extremely draining to fight off of your back. Spencer's endurance was not where it should have been. He seemed to tire towards the end of any match that lasted to the third period. Matt Ramos only had to stay close to Spencer Lee going into the third period. The arm around his neck and the lack of endurance was Spencer Lee's down fall. He simply fatigued to the point exhaustion and went flat on his back. Me? I was bummed after all he has been through to lose in that way, and not win his fourth title. Good for Ramos for believing in himself enough to have formulated a plan, have a little luck on his side to catch Spencer, and being able to last to the end of the match. Matt Ramos was prepared to wrestle three solid periods. Spencer Lee was not.
Well, it wasn't until coach lost to Larry Owens, that he became a true legend! He went on to do some of the greatest things in armature athletic history….
Everybody was gunning for him. Remember, Ramos almost got him two weeks ago. You could see folks were picking at him all along. It was only a matter of time.
Champs produce longer than one day. They are on top all year long. Spencer is still the greatest!
This weekend had some of the biggest upsets…
Dan Gable vs Larry Owings 10 x Bigger…. I didn't EXPECT this to happen MEANING SPENCER LOSING IN THE SEMI'S but it did NOT surprise me not even a little. First of all Matt Ramos whipped his ass. He was 110% READY for this match. YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND the Dan Gable vs Larry Owings impact….. Dan Gable had NEVER LOST (NEVER)…. Spencer had 5 losses in college and LOST the biggest HS Match of his career. Spencer has lost 4 or 5 matches he shouldn't have lost. DAN had lost ZERO… SPENCER LEE WAS NEVER GOING TO BE THE GREATEST WRESTLER OR COLLEGE WRESTLER OF ALL TIME… He had a cool story with the ACL tears or should I say the absence of his ACL's but too many losses 6 to even be in the conversation. He's the GREATEST WRESTLER from the TOP POSITION of all time… Here is the thing…I WISH HE HAD FINISHED…, I WISH THAT HE HAD NEVER LOST…But he DID….. He lost to a VERY GOOD Matt Ramos but not a GREAT Matt Ramos…. Matt didn't even win in the Finals…. I don't think Matt's ultimate goal was to WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP….It was to beat SPENCER LEE… I get your HEART….You are a SPENCER LEE FAN….AS AM I…. Like I said this is not something I expected but it did not completely surprise me…, Spencer has done this before in the BIG ONE'S …. STATE FINALS SENIOR YEAR was a BIGGER UPSET than this one… 144-0 and 3 State Championships… One more he FINISHES UNDEFEATED at 145-0 and 4 State Championship and would have been the #1 pound for pound wrestler in the country his SENIOR year…. if he had beaten Matt he AND Pat Glory he would have finished 100-5 as a 4 x National Champion instead of 98-6 as a 3 x Champion… There is NO QUESTION that Spencer is one of the GRETEST AMERICAN WRESTLERS of all time and very well could be THE BEST EVER. However he cannot make that claim because of his 7 ALL TIME LOSSES when Cale Sanderson was 159 – 0 and a 4 x National Champion and 3 x Hodge Trophy Winner not to mention an Olympic Gold Medalist

As an Iowan living in IC, it was devastating to see our hero get shot down. I think it may have been what others say. He had everything to lose and had a target on his back.
On another point, what the heck was the guy in the red tie doing there?! Did he stay for the wrestling. or just do a walk through? Let the guys have the attention, 45!!!

It shut me down for two days and was the most depressing loss I've witnessed as a sports fan of many different sports. It was like a head on car crash, SHOCKING. It appeared Spencer would pull it out and fend off the last ditch efforts to score by Ramos. He didn't look right throughout the match, much like he didn't look very healthy/good during the Iowa State duel back in December. Unfortunately wrestling has taken a greater toll on his body than other greats which is sad because I doubt there will be another 125-pounder very soon that is as strong and fun to watch dominate as Spencer. Had he won his fourth title he also would have won the Hodge. A profoundly discouraging end to a great college career from a class act.
