The 12, 2020 GBSB contestants are:
Alex – A university student and prize winning competitive ballroom dancer. Has Alex had enough time to focus on his studies, dancing and sewing ambitions?
Ali – A paramedic who runs her own sewing themed blog since 2013 and arranges sewing meet-ups. Her other passion is golf and makes her own golf clothes. Likely to be able to work complex tasks under pressure.
Angillia – A former school teacher, who loves to make formal wear and party clothes, which tend to be complex garments which need time to prefect. Being able to showcase her talents within the strict time constraints could be an issue. Angillia also practices mindfulness, so could be a useful skill whilst sewing under time pressure.
Clare – A hospital medical consultant, who loves to make vintage style clothing. However, with a stressful and demanding job, and only sewing in earnest 5 years ago, has she has enough time to develop her own creative style?
Fiona – As a golf widow and 3 children to sew for, it’s likely that Fiona has lots of practical sewing experience. Coupled with making all her home soft furnishings, it’s highly probable that she has developed an expertise in fabrics.
Hazel – Hazel enjoys making clothes for her husband and infant son as well as making her own clothes. This leads me to believe that she has developed her own unique style. Would her creative style be difficult to showcase in a competitive sewing environment?
Liz – As a fan of gothic punk style, Liz is a surely a shoe-in with judge Esme Young. The only possible limit is her preferred colour palette of just 2 colours, black and grey. However, Liz has made her own wardrobe, which could be indicative of her advanced sewing experience.
Mark – Mark sews vintage inspired male clothing, despite only sewing for 3 years. This should place him firmly in Patrick Grant’s good books. Taking inspiration from Doctor Who costumes places Mark firmly in my good books.
Matt – Making drag clothing takes strong, in-depth skills, so this should put Matt at a strong advantage over most of the other contestants.
Nicole – Nicole likes sewing with metallics, Asian prints and fabrics sourced from Parisian fabric fairs. I would sway therefore that she has developed a strong knowledge of unusual fabrics and isn’t afraid of bold prints.
Peter – Peter is inspired by designers Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. In theory, he should be favoured by both judges, especially as he seems comfortable experimenting with sewing.
Therese – An advocate of reduce, reuse, recycle, Therese upcycles clothes for her grandchildren and updates her own clothes. This indicates that she may do well in the transformation challenges.
Predictions.
Based on the above (and the pictures in the book that accompanies the series, Sustainable Style by A Bruce and C Akselson,) I predict that the final 6 will be Peter, Matt, Therese, Mark, Liz & Nicole.
I also predict that the first to leave the series will either be Alex, as I feel that he has not amassed the amount of practical experience the rest of the contestants have, or Angillia, whose sewing style appears to be in conflict with the fast paced nature of the competition.
Are my predictions correct? Find out in the next post.
