Gary Lineker is due to return to hosting Match of the Day for the BBC. It is understood the corporation will apologise to the presenter.

It follows a tumultuous weekend for the BBC and its football shows, notably Match of the Day on Saturday evening which had a much shorter airtime of 20 minutes, without commentary, pundit analysis, post-match interviews or theme music.

It is unclear if Lineker will be back on air for the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend.

  1. This is a demonstration of my club's practicability of our core values, our slogan 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. My manager was so obsessed by the injustice meted at Gary Lineker that we lost a crucial match to a bottom league table. 😅😅😅

  2. Im only interested in watching the games on MOD and have absolutely no time for the chit chat before and co. Don't want to waste my time listening to Liniker and co.

  3. I wonder why Gary doesn’t have illegal immigrants in his house every day🤔. Not just for a couple of weeks(bet that illegal immigrant was vetted for weeks before he stayed in his house🤨) shame he doesn’t house the homeless British soldiers 🤔

  4. BBC are a joke to even do anything over a tweet expressing a view he is entitled to.

  5. Maudlin tweet from this guy: "A final thought: however difficult the last few days have been, it simply doesn't compare to having to flee your home from persecution or war to seek refuge in a land far away. Its heartwarming to have seen the empathy towards their plight from so many of you."

What you won't see is a tweet from Gary Lineker using the term "economic migrant" instead of refugee, in a negative way; or any recognition that a substantial number of people coming across the Channel are economic migrants, not refugees; nor any acknowlegement that economic migration is wrong or unfair or a stealing of other people's space or causes serious problems; or any suggestion those on the move should stay at home and improve there instead rather than deprive their homeland of their strength, talent and skills to selfishly seek out a "better life", turning their backs on their own people. That's the trouble with people like Gary Lineker, it's all about polishing up their own image, cynically presenting only the fake false "nice guy" side, showing how loving and welcoming they are about the whole world coming here, never expressing it as a problem in any way. Leaving other people to deal with the practical issues in a honest way that shows balance, integrity and proper insight, that they themselves won't dirty their image-presentation with because it might involve them having to say something disagreeable.

Two-faced and dishonest, in other words. Gary Lineker is bound to have his own private views about economic migration which will be at variance with his only-welcoming image however many come here, but he won't express them; he will concentrate on picking his words carefully to polish up his squeaky-clean I-love-everyone image showing just how nice and amazingly supportive he is, leaving other people to address the actual problems.

If someone high profile isn't willing to discuss the problems migration causes, warts and all, but only wants to pretend there aren't any problems and the only answer is to admit anyone who wants to come to the UK, even by breaking into Britain by an illegal route, he should keep his mouth shut instead of inflaming people with rash one-sided dishonest tweets.

If the BBC isn't willing to get rid of him now, hopefully they will avoid renewing his contract in two years' time. His compadres won't be entitled to bully the BBC into renewing his contract in 2025: that's for the BBC to decide

  6. Gary should stick to football punditry I’m all for freedom of speech but stop using politics In football and take a good look at the strain the migrant crisis puts on are already strained country cost taxpayers millions and to book them in are country takes 6 million a day it puts a strain on are nhs too also we struggle to house the people already here and the people coming over here we send billions a year in foreign aid a year i think we do enough there coming over from France and let’s face it France isn’t a 3rd world country is it and full off war no it’s cus the French don’t want them so quietly let them slip through there country to England an Gary it’s easy for you to comment how much a year do you earn 1.3 million Yh well us all on average wage we are the ones losing are jobs cus the migrants coming over will work for peanuts let’s see if u have the same comments if someone from Albania takes your job

  7. Yet still presented in Qatar where 6500 migrant workers died, some while building the stadiums

  8. I cannot believe anyone has stated the obvious.

This isn't political, free speech or anything to do with impartiality.
It's simple and In my opinion one reason that Lineker and the BBC have done this. Attention and ratings, simple.
Match of the day is one of, if not the biggest programme the BBC have
I think I'm right in saying, ratings have been consistently falling??

Look at the attention he and the BBC have received. And by no coincidence he's miraculously reinstated 😂. We've all been deceived.

  9. The majority of football fans would prefer MotD in silence to having the smug opinions of Lineker and his buddies forced down their TV.

  10. Motd was sooo much better without having any has been footballers opinions forced down ya ears saving money for ridiculous over paid pundits, ten minutes of goals, what's not to like!! Keep it that way man.

  11. Labour has compared Tory pressure on the BBC to suspend Gary Lineker to something akin to Vladimir Putin’s Russia – sparking a new row in the saga.

Shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell accused Tory ministers and MPs of orchestrating a “cancel campaign” which saw the Match of the Day host pulled off air.

Despite the star’s reinstatement, the Labour MP said the saga had “exposed how susceptible the BBC leadership is to government pressure” and highlighted Tory hypocrisy on free speech.

  12. Disappointed that this smug trio will be back 'presenting' MOTD and having to listen to them talking about their own past glories week in week out. There shouldn't be a presenter on this show in the first place as the analysis is extremely low level and non needed.
