The best Track Spike Shoes for Beginners.

In this video, we describe what the best spikes are for those looking to start Track and Field Athletics.

This was a question one of our mums from our Track Club nights asked?

It can be often difficult to know what type of track shoes are what is needed when you are first starting out in Track and field athletics. This is because there is little information about running spikes. However, what we recommend depending if you are a sprinter or a distance runner are middle-distance spikes and Sprint spikes respectively with the sprinter having access to both middle-distance spike for training and Sprint spikes.

The key difference between sprint spikes and MD spikes are that Sprint have no heel as such where MD does.

In this video we breifly discuss Spike pins, these screw into the bottom of the shoe.

If you need new pins I highly recommend the Omni-Lite or Nano-Grip brand. They are made from ceramic material which is 70% lighter than stainless steel. They come in all three designs as well to fit your needs. The link for these are below. However, they are not the only brand and I have examples/links below of metal varieties.

When it comes to Spikes there are 2 varieties Metal spike pins and the lesser found Ceramic spike pins. Metal ones generally last longer and are more sturdy none the less weight more, yet again their weight is almost negligible in my opinion, however, this all comes down to personal preference.

Also, you are likely online find spike pins that are painted cool colours normally in black. These often metal spike pins colour does not as rule last long with use.

Note when buying Spike pins the minimum limit is 6mm anything over 6mm is considered Cross Country spikes, for X-Country spikes I recommend standard Spike pins but 11-12mm. For the track, it is best to have spikes that are 5-6mm high anything above is not allowed under IAAF rules, as it degrades the track quicker.
