I've played with many grips of different weights and sizes. I have longer fingers, and always felt uncomfortable until I finally went to very large grips. It also helps a ton to remove shape from my longer clubs.
Everything I've learned myself exploring different grip sizes plus my own tennis background playing with much larger grips is that larger grips allow you to hold the grip lighter so your wrist & arm muscles will be more relaxed and are able to fire faster – so while you may think you aren't swinging faster, a larger grip, with relaxed forearms is able to produce more speed.
The recent hyped up training prosendr is focused on the ability to maintain trail wrist extension in the downswing. Do you think difference in grip size might affect this?
I always had mid sized grips due to having larger hands but I recently switched over to Jumbo Max STR8 Tech (Medium) and my wrists feel much better. Def loving bigger grips, spendy but well worth it imo
Wow, great work today guys. I am going to try all these out at my upcoming fitting.
Interesting one. My hands are "low volume" or "piano fingers". That is to say "XL" glove for correct length but just "ML" palm and finger diameter. Gloves and grips are just pure confounding me. I have built up some different grips and found it really interesting… but not yet definitive, except if I play standard size I get cramps in hands during a range session while midsize or larger is fine. Also the adaption I had to make between Tour Velvet midsize and midsize MCC+4 was surprisingly large.
just regripped all mine with TV +4 midsize with extra layer of tape at bottom to reduce taper even more. So comfortable and really feel better control and able to put power through the club. Wish I'd done it 20 years ago
How would the results be if the club had the same swing weight?
Loved it guys! Well done. Biggest take away is grip pressure. I think it's why the less tapered grips are out there more now. Definitely information I'll use with golfers when they come to see me. Grips are my thing! My little niche out here in YYC!
Tried jumbo couldnt close the face and hit wipey fades, tried mcc standard and was hooking everything, mcc plus 4 little draw, midsize cp2 little draw, jumbo lite fade. Dont like seeing the ball go right so play plus 4 or cp2 mid
Just got a fit for irons from Titleist and they did not have an option for grip size. Only standard grips are available.
I did express my disappointment as I play a midsize grip.
I'm wondering if a jumbo grip will help with tennis/golf elbow with the less grip pressure needed or is it only a motion thing causing the injury.
i don't have large hands but standard sized grips always felt too thin for me. I'll be trying a midsize grip now.
This is definitely something I’ve been thinking of last couple years…
Have always used standard. But, might try mid at some point
Others have been saying it, but the most interesting nugget is grip pressure influencing closure rate. It would be nice to see the impact of reduced taper on closure. I think maybe even grip texture/firmness could be a factor. I can’t imagine someone is going to grip super tightly on a z cord, but they may need to squeeze tighter on a dri tac or other soft grips with little texture to avoid feeling it’s going to slip
Be conscious of the weight of the grips as they have a considerable effect on swing weight and balance of the club. Especially if you are moving to an oversize grip. I made the mistake of installing the lamkin crossline oversize, a very popular grip, great look and feel but didn't realize it weighs 75g. I lost 3 swing-weight points. The only JUMBO i have found that is in the same weight ballpark as a standard or mid size grip and not "jumbo max or winn brand" is the golf pride tour velvet.
I feel like I have to grip a standard and undersized grip to tight to keep it from feeling like it's going to slip. I'm much more comfortable with a midsize grip and feel my freedom in my wrists
I use the jumbomax grips and love them. Only negative is testing out new clubs they are not available.
I changed up to midsize two years ago. My left hand is 8 inches long and my middle finger is 3.5 inches long, I wear a large glove which is tight, I had swollen hands due to rheumatoid arthritis and in the palm of my left hand I felt there was a big gap between grip and hand. Now it's so much better and I wish I had midsized grips from the start.
Love this. Thank you!
I play a Finau inspired setup, lamkin UTX midsize with two extra total wraps and four extra on right hand. Love the feel and face control.
Once again, great information.
Over the years I have migrated from standard to midsize Grips and for the last 3 years, I have been using the JumboMax XL on all my clubs and totally LOVE them.
My original motivation was arthritis in my fingers which got so bad that I was on the verge of quitting golf, now with the JumboMax XL Grips I can play totally pain-free with the added bonus that I can hit the Ball harder, so my yardages have improved as has my dispersion
Interesting vid I normally use a multi compound midsize with 2 layers of tape but just looked at my ping g425s blue dot awt shaft reg and it’s golf pride 360 tour velvet so is that standard and maybe why my bad shot is a pull/hook ? Thanks liam
Love the vids
I have quite skinny hands usually use medium glove size but have been playing midsize and they feel much better to play with
Would be interesting to try and manage grip weight in this test – some brands use different materials to avoid swing weight changes
I was so excited to watch this when I saw the thumbnail. Really disappointed that no Jumbomax grips were included in this comparison. A lot of claims have been made about how they allow you to swing faster because of not having to grip as hard. However, it’s impossible for us regular golfers to test them at retailers.
It just feels like you really missed an opportunity to make a much more interesting and educational video.
It would have been interesting to throw in a JumboMax Ultralite in there. The small, medium, and large are all ~48g which the same as the undersize Tour Velvet. This way you can compare the size/diameter while controlling for swing weight.
Can you substantiate the claim that the jumbo max increases swing speed?
Always messing around with different size grips mainly on my woods and wedges. Little hack I learnt was to use you car tyre pump if you have one and a ball inflation needle
to blow them on and off. Got plenty of funny looks in the driving range carpark doing it.
This jives with the idea of using larger grips for putting. Theoretically, smaller grips require more grip pressure, larger grips require less grip pressure. Cool to see that translate to irons. I find this also to be true because when I'm not playing well, I get tense and tighten my grip more and tend to hook the ball more. Closing the face too fast due to increased grip pressure. Great video.
Recently changed from standard MCC Plus 4 to MCC Plus 4 midsize. Remarkable difference in such a small change, especially in the irons.
Two other points at play here: playing an incorrectly sized grip is a risk factor for medial epicondylitis ("golfer's elbow") which may take a few weeks to develop depending on how much one plays. Six-to-8 weeks recovery time is not unusual for this tendinitis. The other factor regarding grip pressure, there are well know tables in the ergonomic and biomechanic literature that illustrate the effect of the diameter of the object being gripped vs the maximum grip force the can be applied, the Maximum Voluntary Contraction (MVC). Golf grips are very small relative to the size for maximum MVC, but you wouldn't want to play with that sized grip (Apprx. 3.7cm) because releasing the club would be more than difficult. Golf grips are "inefficient" in this regard but reinforces your point that applying maximum grip pressure is NOT what you want to do. A test with non-taper grips would be intriguing. I have played mid-sized non-taper grips for quite some time to mitigate medial epicondylitis.
Still LOVE how the Dirty Dog is back
Loved this! My only issue I've ever had with grips is being shorter at 5'8 ish with a short palm and long fingers is swing weights with midsized grips. They can be quite heavy and really mess with how much awareness I have with the head. Winn grips being lite are neat but they dont handle high speed very well and twist unlike a good rubber grip. Going to experiment with a smaller jumbomax soon to see if they twist or shift during the swing.
I think it’s great you guys revisited this topic. As a follow on, I would love to see comparisons between reduced taper and standard taper grips.
Also I’d like to see what impact to swing weight has in changing grip sizes for the average golfer. I’ve always played standard grips until I discovered my hand/glove size suggests I need to go into a midsize grip. I swapped out grips but didn’t realize how much weight to the grip end of the club that change made to the overall swing weight.
I’m not a robot so I can’t say for certain if that had any impact to my swing, but to remove that ‘variable’, I moved back to a standard grip (+4) with +2 wraps to give me more of tweener grip size and maintain the relatively same swingweight with std grip.
I tried out Jumbomax str8 tech grips and they were so much more comfortable for me and allowed me to barely apply any pressure to the grip. But since they were so big I switch from an interlocked grip to 10 finger and find I like that grip much more.
I have a fairly small hand but I use midsize grips , standard size is a tad to small for my liking, I feel like I grip to tight because there is just not enough for me to feel comfortable, never really thought how this would affect my strike
I picked up used clubs with undersized grips. Got five wraps of tape under them and they feel more like midsize grips. Now I can swing more freely without thinking about pulls that I used to get with the without the wraps.
