While Scripps Sports doesn't look like a player, there certainly seems to be a vacuum in sports broadcasting, with all these Regional Sports Networks going bankrupt.
The Sinclair Broadcasting Group owns 90% of the Bally Sports Network. They've got a lot of CW affiliates across the nation in their portfolio. And the Nexstar, Media Group, which owns the CW, has a lot more.
The CW just got into the live sports broadcasting game with LIV Golf. So…?
Is it possible that someone at ION spoke with the PAC and did not tell their superiors at Scripps before this got leaked? It wouldn't be the first time that the left hand did not know what the right hand was doing.
TCU in Big 12, BYU in Big 12, and now Utah gonna be in Big 12. All were from MWC and now in Big 12. New Mexico is in MWC too, they gonna be in Big 12 too. 😉

Financially it makes no sense.
If ION was asked not to make public, then calling them will provide you the answers you received as well as Stewart Mandel. I would not throw it under the bus.
