Rotation & Shaft Plane // Ian’s 2nd Lesson with Scott Cowx

World-renowned instructor Scott Cowx is back in the studio with us this week, starting with Ian’s second lesson where they refine the backswing position and start to introduce more lead side rotation for better face control.

  1. Very bold, I'm reluctant to make such drastic changes. I can see where the potential benefits can be.
Does this change affect the loft/lie of the new i230's?

  2. I would say, because I do it, and it works, is, why not just take it back to the position below Ian? Like Rahm. All that taking it up then dropping it into the slot just adds another piece of movement that has to be accurately placed in order to be consistent. Stay on the same plane back as you will be on the way down. And if you watch the video, Ian on his best shot didn't take it to above Ian. Lol. Now if that above Ian thing allows for more speed because you can freely take the club back more, and it allows more speed, just keep it in the slot and rotate back more. Rahm only takes it back 75%. He is starting his down swing from where this lesson has you make another move on the way down from 100%. If you can see it and watch the pros, they are not going above Ian then dropping it back down. Some are. But most of the best ball strikers are not. Now this could be just a trick to exaggerate a feel. Teachers do that a lot.

  3. I share in the same swing flaws as Ian so these drills are extremely important in understanding how to correct them. Thanks for the info

  4. Great video and great work Ian on working so hard on these changes. I’m very impressed with Scott and his ability to teach in small increments and how he’s such a proponent of feel. And having the student feel the move or motion. It’s not talk. It’s hands on feel oriented instruction to ensure Ian is feeling correct and incorrect sequencing. It’s so simple yet a lot of teachers can’t communicate this. It’s wonderful to watch and I got a lot out of this video and the previous. Ian and I fight similar motions so this has been awesome

  5. Hello Boys, I played my first round of golf in 20 years yesterday (60 degrees F in NY) and shot a 91 (41 on the front nine). I need to thank you, James Robinson and Dennis, Peter Finch, AVG Golfer, Jon and Ash from Stacked golf, and Golfalot for reigniting my interest in golf. I just got fitted for a new full bag and can't wait for the weather to get warmer so I can play more often. (Paradym irons, Aerojet driver, Rogue fairway woods and Hybrid and a Hi-Toe wedge)

  6. I'm short (@ 5'-5"), with a larger rib cage and this swing pattern has been a total game changer.

  7. Lots of “internal” Thinking and doing stuff- how do you get this to be external- see target and hit ball to it? Like the explanations and models but do most players have the time to practice and engrain such multiple concepts and feelings Probably go play and be right back to old pattern?

  8. 7:58 "Now you can even hit it". Ian's body and mind literally freezes up and cannot move. He has recoil back up, and if you look closely at his downswing the top of the grip is back pointing slightly inside the ball again the he swings through. The good shots Ian had, all had the top of the grip aligned with the ball and even slightly inside. The two times he tried to shallow the club the most, the ball went way right. I simply can not understand this advice.

  9. Scotts' remark about external rotation was a lightbulb for me. My shoulder injury and surgery have severely limited my shoulder rotation so this could be the pattern I need. Thankyou

  10. Ian, the first haywood woods are now up for pre-sale. Their driver looks like a blacked out sim on the top and inspired by the g400 on the bottom. Can we expect a review in the future?

  11. Hmm, Ian switched from Miura to Ping, but looks like using PXG during the lesson??? Any comments on this?

  12. Fantastic video. True lightbulb moment for me. This will definately fix my high hands flippy swing. Went out today and put it to the test. Felt in more control of my ballflight than ever before. Thanks to Scott and team TXG.

  13. Tremendous insight. That thought to move the rib rather than just concentrating on hips is golden. I love how something that looked so shallow delivered a path around 2. Big muscles at work. Keep grinding Ian. It’s looking flush!

  14. Never heard this from other online instructors…great instructions from Scott.. should have him more often …👍

  15. Boys this series is so great. I've developed more of an Ian swing in this instance where I tilt too much and it causes me to go too In-out, causing blocks since I don't struggle with face control. I know the feels I'll be practicing this week! Keep up the great work gentlemen!

  16. Great insight. Is this technique transferable to the long stick. Would hate to have to have two swings (given that I don’t even have one!!) Tx.

  17. Check lists , essential for accountants and President of the USA. For a subconscious, chain action golf swing, happening in less than 1/4 second.. not so much.
Right elbow, shoulder are controlled by the right hand(right hand swinger) One intention to keep right palm facing the sky at top of BS through impact, guarantees right elbow and right shoulder perform properly, as well as proper shallow plane.

  18. Thanks…. Some amazing instruction…Scott's instruction is getting a bit Biblical here ? The last time God considered a Rib being significant in the Golf Swing it Created the LPGA Tour? Back then, we had to give one of those Ribs up !!! I'm still working on the Chicken Wing being my issue !! So while this is Brilliant … It's certainly "Food for thought" Lovin It !!!
