Which type of GOLF SWING do you have? @JulianMellor

There are 3 types of golf swings, so which one is natural to you? There is a typical arm swing that 66% of golfers have, like Monty’s. There is a swing when the hips and shoulders move together like Ernie Els, and there is a swing where the shoulder initiates the backswing and the lower body fires through impact like John Rahm. What’s important is that you swing the way that is natural to you, and you do not try and fit into something that is unnatural. Dr. David Wright is an expert In checking which one you are, but be careful not to get too confused. One this all successful golfers have in common is balance at the set up and through the golf swing.

  1. I'm a arms swinger tend to be too wide with stance and no balance will work on narrowing it

  2. My friends say that my swing is known as "Egyptian style" because they say that Ramses' mummy swings faster than me.

  3. Since I‘m praticing the easy swing my kollegs say: It looks like in TV. Thanks hand kr from Germany. Uwe

  4. Very interesting Julian, this really crystallises a lot of what I’ve been wondering recently; it’s enlightening to realise that us amateurs do better to work out which one we can repeat the best rather than being constrained to fitting into one single “perfect” mould.
Also very interesting that you see at least 3 different styles rather than just 2 polar opposites – would you not think of Rahm at one end of the spectrum, Els at the other, with Monty in the middle, or is it more of a “triangle” with Monty having unique elements neither of the others have? Anyhow fascinating observations , thanks again for sharing

  5. Hi Julian I hope you’re well. As you know I’ve tinkered between various methods and my aim is to get from 12 to single figures this year. I have to say nothing feels better than the swing you teach. The swish through impact is amazing and the full turn and hinge which feels a little Monty. It certainly looks graceful. My issue is under pressure or off tight lies the modern ‘keep the club face square and rotate through just feels more reliable which I guess is why it’s more commonly taught. I like the higher ball flight of your method but the compression of the modern swing also has its merits. I’m actually off to see the UK’s first one plane swing academy tomorrow in Chepstow for a trial look which is supposedly more repeatable ( set up same as impact etc) so will see how that goes. Let me know when you’re indoor facility is up and running as I think long term your method could be the way forward. It’s certainly more fun!

  6. This sounds very much like what is described in “The LAWs of Golf” by Mike Adams. Different swing types based on personal physical attributes. Tall, slender people with long limbs (Davis Love III) tend toward the Arc swing type, while thick chested people with shorter arms (Ian Woosnam) tend toward the Width swing type. It definitely makes sense. I’ll go have a look at Dr. Wright’s YouTube videos. Thanks very much.
