How Much Faster Do Spikes Make You?

A few weeks ago I ran an all out mile in trainers in 5 minutes and 40 seconds. In this video I throw a pair of spikes on to see how much faster they make me. I am now posting all my training to my fitness app! It’s free to download here https://www.nicksymmondsfitapp.com

  1. Pretty cool experiment with the spikes. I'm a high schooler looking to get my 800 time down. Right now Im running a 1:58 indoor. Any tips for improvement?

  2. If it was anyone but Nick I would question training a 10k to lower your mile but I'm not about to question an Olympian on their training lol. I think you have the deadlift + mile in the bag but if there are any struggles increasing the max dead lift or being able to double 500lbs but only do it once would make that run about 5x easier not being a a max lift.

  3. The spikes definitely help improve your performance. However, it should be noted that Nick is a former Olympian so he has genetic talent and a highly capable aerobic system, so he was able to shave his time down very quickly in a matter of weeks. Going from a 5:40 to a 5:15 could take a hardworking runner many months to accomplish. The spikes make your feel faster and lighter so that will help you run a few seconds faster maybe — not 25. All around great job to Nick!

  4. Runner first, trying to get more into lifting. Probably going to try out the app, but mainly want the lifting to improve my running as I'm an ultra runner who goes for long distance trail runs. Assume there is stuff in there to help with that?

  5. I wonder how much difference it would make to run a 400 meter on Alphafly vs spikes. And or how fast the prototype Viperfly would have been. Surprised no one made their own viperfly by combining shoe parts

  6. You said your running 7.75 miles on jan 31st like its a big deal but that would have been nothing in your prime😂

  7. Nick, this is not a knock on you. But the drone footage makes you look 300lbs.

  8. They make your feet and legs stronger which allows you to run faster. That comes with training in the spikes. Also spikes are light weight and provide more traction on the track which allows you to run faster. They make a huge difference.

  9. I like this content more than what the main channel has become. You're a YT pro now, but I miss this more casual content without the YouTube meta

  10. I felt like I was FLYING in my spikes when I tried them for the first time. I shaved almost .5 seconds off my hurdle time (55) so a huge improvement! Meet tomorrow, then leagues!

  11. Guys do you think that sub 6.7 60m and 600lb is possible? Last year the same day I ran 6.77 and did 460. Once I ran sub11, sub22, sub50 and the next day i did 510. I think I can improve but I have to keep my BW roughly the same and strenght and speed training does not colide at my peak speed.

  12. I’m trying to go 4:20 indoors by our conference meet in February…I need roughly 8 more seconds 😬Sometimes when I start to lose motivation in training I watch ur videos and the joy you bring to this sport becomes infectious

  13. Nick….are you sure spikes make a 36 sec difference? That sounds extreme to me. What have you been doing between runs, what was the weather on both runs, etc. I'm sure you also had some benefit from the earlier time trial. Love the videos

  14. Thank you I’m trying to beat 5 minutes and I was wondering if my shoes actually mattered and I think you showed me they did so now I’m going to invest in some spikes

  15. This is exciting! I’m right behind you Nick! 75 lbs deadlift and 45 seconds to go! I’ll tag you the results when I get it 🙂

  16. I feel like the specific test of spikes VS trainers should be done over a shorter distance as well

  17. I’m a sophomore in high school and I ran this exact mile time as my PR in this indoor track season.
