LEAN SHAFT FORWARD with your Wedges and Irons for Better Contact

Lean the shaft of your golf club forward for better golf shots

Lean Shaft Forward

Should you lean your shaft forward with every golf club? In this golf tips video we will review where to position your hands and the grip of your club in relation to the ball.

We argue that at address the end of your club should point towards your lead hip. It should not point straight up in what would be a perpendicular-to-the-ground position. Leaning your shaft forward will encourage you to strike down on the ball, to trap the ball where the clubhead will be hitting the ball first before making contact with the ground after impact.

Note that your club shaft should be pointing towards your left hip with all of your clubs. But because the ball position changes depending on the club at hand the amount of shaft lean will also change. This is why this swing thought is especially relevant for mid to shorter irons. Indeed, with a driver the ball will be located in line with your left hip already, which means that there shouldn’t be much of a shaft lean at all in that case. The more towards the center the ball is located, the more shaft lean there should be.

  1. Tried this at the range this week and just wow. Created that "effortless" swing without feeling like I had any compensating moves. My only question is why do so many sites and instructors say point the club butt at our belt buckle? Is that just simply wrong?
