How to Play the FOUR BALL Golf Format Used by the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup

Learn the rules of fourball (four ball, team match play), the golf format that is used during the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup.

Four Ball | Team Match Play

In this video we review how to play the fourball format of play in golf. We discuss how four ball is essentially a team version of match play, where one team of 2 golfers will play against a team formed by the other two golfers in the group. The objective here is not to post the lower score overall but to try to win holes, as in regular match play.

You try to win holes by putting the best score out of the team’s for a given hole against the best score from the other team on that same hole. Whichever team had the lowest score on a hole wins the hole and so on until the end of the match.

We also cover the tactics used in match play. For example, after seeing your partner hit their drive out of bounds you may be tempted to play a safer shot, hoping to stay in play. Likewise, if the second team to tee-off sees both their opponents hit drives out of bounds they may be tempted to play safer shots into play to try to win the hole easily.

Fourball is a very enjoyable team golf format, especially for beginner golfers who can then rely on their better teammate to post a good score for the team on most holes.
