Using an ILLEGAL GOLF TOOL! Can I Turn an Old Wedge into a NEW ONE?!

I have never used this seriously good illegal groove sharping tool before? I don’t even know if this is going to work and make these grooves razor Sharpe! It’s worth a go as these tools are a fraction of the cost of a brand new wedge right?

So in todays video Alex tests out this GROOVE sharping tool!

On Par Groove Sharpener

I thought that these thing were a bit of a gimmick and don’t really work so i have got out my 10 year old wedge with blunt grooves and one that creates hardly any spin and the mission is to make this new again by sharpening the grooves!

So many wedges out there in 2021 but what wedge creates the most spin? You have the: Titleist Vokey, Cobra Snake Bite, Cleveland CBX 2, Ben Hogan Equalizer, Callaway Jaws MD5, PXG 0311 Milled, Cleveland RTX ZipCore and Mizuno ES21. What one is the best wedge of 2021 in your opinion?

  1. Effectively who will control the grooves, but more importantly how? With this tool you may enlarge the grooves of about a couple of hundreds of millimeters, but the were used of about the same… What about the angle of sides' grooves… And again how to mesure that… Frankly I already thought of that sometimes, for cleaning purpose, as my wedges aren't that used… Unfortunately. Thanks for this interesting video, cheers

  2. Try clamping the club in a vise if you use the tool again. Either use a rubber cushion with a groove in it, like the ones used to hold the shaft in a vise when regripping, or a pad fashioned from some other appropriate material to clamp the clubhead securely in a vise. I'd think a lubricant with a bit more viscosity, like motor oil, would work better than WD-40. Seems WD-40 has become the panacea for everything, much like duct tape.😉 As for "legality"– if restoring grooves to their original legal configuration is "illegal", then your brand new wedge is "illegal" as well. You're allowed to change out old grips with conforming new grips, are you not? If the rules allowed Tiger Woods to recruit a crowd equivalent to a large landscaping crew to move a 1000 lb boulder, I'm not overly concerned about a tool like this. On the other hand, this silly legalism took a win away from Craig Stadler for kneeling on a towel so his pants wouldn't get dirty to hit a ball out of a bush under the rule of "improving your stance"…..O!M!G!–What the heck are you doing when you get your feet "settled in" for a bunker shot? Okay, I just stepped down from my soap box.

  3. Are golf groove sharpeners legal? While it is perfectly legal to use a golf groove sharpener, your modified club must still comply with the rules of the game regarding golf groove alignment, depth and spacing. … There are also limitations on how sharp grooves can be on any clubs with a loft greater than 25 degrees.

So unless you got someone going CSI Forensics on your clubs they should be fine to use

You can pick them up off EBay for about $10 each so even if they don't last long on it is almost as cheap as regripping a single club

  4. I have a different one that i got 10+ years ago, its definitely harder steel than the wedge and has two ends one for V the other for U grooves. I use it occassionally but i feel it only gets the dirt out 🙂 but it cant hurt. As for the legality of using these devices, that alone does not make the club non conforming at all, so go to town on it! Whether the grooves are conforming or not is a question of fact that could only be tested with specialised equipment. But of course there is also your conscience 🙂 provided that the tool you use is designed to be conforming its going to be almost impossible to breach the rules.

  5. It goes a lot smoother if you use some spray lubrication before you use the tool.

  6. Great video Alex. I used 2 of these to bring back to life a 15 year old set of McGregor irons for my younger brother to learn to play golf with .
I personally thought they worked very well . Keep up the good work

  7. I have this same tool and it did make improvement to my wedge. Agree with you on its longivity but for a few quid it's not bad. Great video👏👏. Could you do a review on the kirkland golf ball and compare it to a top branded ball? Would like to see difference in performance on course

  8. I saw this tool a while back. Saw the same complaints you mentioned. Looked around for something I already have that might work. Found 2 options. 1) Was a Dremal tool. I was concerned it might do too much even though it was easier. Discovered an ice pick would work as well. That’s what I decided to use. It worked great. I don’t play any tournament golf, just recreational. We don’t adhere to every rule of golf. Our group just play to get out, get some exercise, as most of us are experienced, (older) trying to enjoy a difficult game… We’re not Tour players, playing for millions, with a team of people behind us. Unless you’re one of them, which I personally feel is sort of extreme, lighten up, and get out and play. More people leave the game, trying to emulate those guys, and most of us will never be able to….Lastly…. Stop wasting your hard earned dollars on the latest fad of equipment. All you’re doing is stuffing the pockets of those you see on TV. They don’t play with what you buy…Try getting out and practicing some. Try different swings that might be more practical for your ability. Video tape your swing with a cell phone. Those clubs currently in your bag will probably do just fine…..

  9. Interesting, but your review would have been more reliable/valid if you had shown the spin rate, ball flight etc using a GCQuad before and after the sharpening.

  10. I purchased a tool last spring but haven't used it yet. I may have to try it since my wedge is 15 years old

  11. I’ve had this tool for 4-5 years. I game 10 year old Nicklaus HighCT irons and a 50 year old Hogan Special sand wedge. I sharpen grooves twice a year on the SW, PW, LW and GW. It works great for me.

Pro tip, Alex: put masking tape on toes and heels to prevent accidental scoring. Also, apply a spritz of WD-40 to clubface to lesson your elbow strain😉

  12. The old box grooves you mentioned were incredible, when the ball took off low and started rising you knew what would happen when it hit the green haha

  13. I still have a Vokey with square (boxed) grooves and that club is still ridiculous when it comes to spin.

  14. If you had any knowledge of the physics/engineering of the face of a club, especially lofted ,you would find that the interaction of THE MILLING of the face is more important than sharpened grooves.

Anyone with any inkling of rules or concerns of legality of grooves can google their club type and find out which grooves they have and use the corresponding sharpening edge.

    Goodbye to my subscription, BS.

  15. Great video Alex! You should check out the GrooVex Golf High Precision Groove Re-sharpener. Game changer!

  16. I think if you are learning, just starting out, cannot afford to buy wedges every week like dear old Tiger, and not playing in any tournament, then I don't see the harm. We live in a throw away society, so great video, thanks
