Is tape on a golf grip illegal? This is my putter, I peeled a grip off that was hanging off. The underlay was this tape. It’s only on the grip, not the clubhead. Just curious because I have a tournament Tuesday.

So you’re saying you want to enter a tournament using the grip tape as the grip?

Well first, you should go get new grip tomorrow.

Otherwise, check the Rules of golf. Tape on a grip, that’s not altered during play, should be as legal as lead tape on a club.

Could possibly be determined to be nonconforming with the tape fraying off at the end like that. Harris English had to make changes to his putter grip in the middle of the Ryder cup because the fraying on his putter grip caused it to be nonconforming due to “not being the same uniform thickness”. Hopefully they’ll disqualify you before anyone sees you with it..

Tape on a club that can be removed during the round does in fact make that club nonconforming. Lead tape that is heat soldered on can’t be removed during the round so is legal. A painted alignment stripe on a putter is legal. Tape doing the same job makes the club nonconforming. I learned that the hard way.

That putter grip looks almost as bad as the infamous Harris English putter
