The previous ball rolling through leaves the grass in ever so slightly a different place than it was before. But of course the path of the ball is determined by the grass it rolls through and the energy that was imparted with the swing of the club. You are only EVER in control of the club. This seems self explanatory, making the elaborate rig and demonstration kind of a "what the hell did you think was going to happen" thing. DUH.

This is caused by reusing the ball path so soon that the grass hadn't recovered it's height. After you smash all the grass down the ball moves faster.
