BLADES VS MALLETS: Which putter style is better?

How many times have you changed out your putter? Once? Twice? Lost count?

Putters are arguably the most important club in the bag, but most of us still don’t know if we should be playing a mallet or blade-style putter. In this video, we pit the two styles against each other to try and answer that question.

In MGS fashion, we’re bringing in our data set of 23,000 putts to give you a breakdown of which putter performs best at 5 feet, 10 feet, and 20 feet.

  1. DO YOU PLAY A MALLET OR BLADE? THE FIRST 500 COMMENTS ENTERED TO WIN A FREE PUTTER FITTING ⛳️

  2. I play mostly blades but i have a couple of mallets too. I like the old blades like acushnet and 8802 but I probably sink more puts with the newer putters.

  3. In the beginning you look for irons that would suit you, coz you learn to strike.
Next you search for a driver, to avoid losing balls and teeing up again.
Next – putter, wedges to lower the score.
And in the end – woods.

While 5 and 3 wood should be first 😉

  4. I do play the PXG Bat Attack and I love it. I have also played the PXG One and Don putter and it is by far my 2nd favorite putter. Tried blades a couple years ago and just do better overall with my mallets. I did a putter fitting as you suggest and they continued to be the style putter for me.

  5. I have a Seemore putter because offset messes me up with putters. Also where I live there is no place close that fits clubs anyway close to how I see online. Dicks Sporting Goods doesn’t fit like that and that’s still 2.5 hour drive away!

  6. I switched from the Armlock blade (the Cobra highlighted in this video, in fact) to a traditional mallet. I brought my putting stick to the corral and spent about 90 minutes putting different putters through a test suite, starting with the stick to make sure I kept it in line, then various distances, including a 25+ foot lag putt. I found that a mallet with some moderate toe hang suited me best. At a round the next day, I gained 6.8 strokes compared to my old putter. For puts 25 feet and longer, I was actually gaining strokes compared to a scratch golfer… and I'm no where near a scratch golfer.

  7. Odyssey 2 ball Triple Track mallet. Backup is an Evnrol ER2 mid blade.(for when the triple track is acting up!)

  8. I'm a blade player! I was fit for my putter and it made a huge difference! Before the fitting I filmed and watched my stroke and knew I needed some toe hang. In the fitting, it showed I had a lot of arc to my stroke. More than I would have thought. I would encourage folks to get fit for your putter and not something we see promoted as much. I also found that I needed a shorter length than standard (33") and significantly more upright (73 degrees). My putting consistency and ability to roll the rock straight improved by bounds.

  9. Comment #109. I’m in for the drawing! Is there such a thing as a hybrid putter? I think that’s what I’m gaming now. Would benefit from a fitting and guidance for my stroke.

  10. Been playing center shafted mallet for years! YES Natalie. Doesn't mean I'm a great putter unfortunately and should get fitted for sure!

  11. Just bought my first mallet putter. Such a difference for me from blade at any distance. Callaway triple track ball and The Odyssey Backstryke D.A.R.T. I feel like I'm cheating. It's point and click putting

  12. Blade for now. Looking at trying a Mallet. Really just want one that fits my length and lie.

The aiming exercises that Edel does in their fittings, looks interesting.

  13. I have been using a Bobby Grace F22 for 14 years. It is dear to me because a) I have never found a better putter and and b) it was fitting to me by Bobby Grace at his tour shop. No other putter has ever come close to the roll this putter puts on a ball

  14. Interesting, but you didn't address the swing style and best putter. I play an Evnroll ER-7 mallet putter. I attempt a straight back and through style. Mallet putters for straight back and through and blades for arch stroke? Guren Rife designs a slight toe hang in his mallets because he believes no one can accomplish a true straight back and through swing.

  15. Great information this new series is outstanding. I have not purchased a club in the past 6 or 7 years without checking MGS.

  16. In my opinion MGS is THE best independent golf equipment website going. I’ve got both an Odyssey Eleven and a Piretti Savona 2 Elite putter but will have to go and give that Evenroll blade a testing after this viewing!!
