The long-awaited end to the Baker Mayfield saga in Cleveland has come: He has been traded to the Carolina Panthers for a mere pittance of what he was worth just a season ago. Baker’s time in Cleveland was once seen as the beginning of a new era for the Browns, but ended up going haywire.

Today, we take a look as to how that might’ve been, and perhaps Cleveland (and most of us) are wrong about Baker. Maybe he thrives in Carolina, or maybe I’m just an idiot and he truly is a bum.

Regardless of what you think of him, you can’t say the Ballad of Baker isn’t a unique one.

  1. Sometimes you just gotta remember that teams themselves can suck more than any player. Baker got wronged, I don’t like him but the Browns not sticking with it and just trying to buy another QB to plug and play is why they continue to suck.

  2. I wish Brady was still the Panther's OC because I think him and Baker would've been a hell of a pair

  3. Carolina won that trade. Baker is a good QB with one bad season due to injury. He brought the fucking browns to the playoffs, that's not an easy task

  4. Even though I’m a fan of a division rival, I never hated the browns and somewhat rooted for them in some cases like in the playoffs. But after what happened this off-season I wish them nothing but more misery

  5. I don’t think Baker is a bad QB, he’s just not on Joe Burrow’s or Tom Brady’s or Mahomes’ (etc.) level, and the Browns have a good roster right now so they probably want to start winning games with those players as soon as possible. With Baker, you’re definitely taking a chance on a qb who hasn’t proven himself as much yet.

  6. im a browns fan and i gotta say it now i never loved him like everyone in this city and i saw through his play and knew he wouldve j kept us mediocre in the end of the day im happy with watson and baker and his stupid fucking commercials every 30 seconds

  7. Browns are the worst ran organization in all of sports. That press conference introducing Watson says it all.

  8. Cant wait for the Steelers video
    – No Big Ben
    – No Heinz Field
    – Kevin Colbert is gone

It’s truly going to be the Yinzer Special

  9. The browns finally drafted a qb that took them to the playoffs. He has a down year due to injury. They entice a potential franchise QB from Houston with the biggest contract in nfl history. Then even more massage therapists come forward or are known to the public. Lol. Now that QB that they went all out for may not play the first season. We thought the Browns entered a new era but nah the Browns always going to be Brown

  10. Garoppolo did the same stupid shit in 2020. Bro, throwing is a full body action. Sit the fuck down and heal. I love Baker, he is a tough mother fucker, but you are COSTING your team when you play hurt.

Also, trading for a rapist and that rapist getting more charges then you trade literally the best QB your franchise ever had? Can you get more Browns?

Trey Lance is elite, @ me all ya'll want.

  11. The man is Brett Favre 2.0 in his play and character. I always loved him. I was excited for the Browns. Now I absolutely hate them. I hope he leads the Panthers to the playoffs and thows Robbie B*tchazz Anderson a hospital pass, if Scrawny ever gets open.

  12. I don't think Mayfield was the reason why OBJ left Cleveland. OBJ looked like he didn't want to be there even when they were forcing the ball to him as much as possible. It was no coincidence that the team got better when OBJ got injured.

That said, I don't particularly like or dislike Mayfield either as a person or as a football player. But he's clearly the best QB that Cleveland has had in at least 2 decades. By a fucking mile. The Browns will surely crash and burn for years because of this mistake. I hope the best of Mayfield has yet to come.

  13. Born and raised Clevelander here. I was a huge fan of Baker in college and loved the way he played. He had a chip on his shoulder mentality that is shared by virtually all native Clevelanders, where you prove to everyone and yourself that you’re better than they think you are. He fit right into our city. I’ll admit that I was incredibly frustrated with his play his second season and last year, but was willing to give him grace bc of bad coaching, injuries, and the fact that I believe that he gave his all to the team and to the city. You could tell that he took pride in that.

I completely agree with UT regarding the fact that if Baker simply sat out and healed up right when he got hurt, he’d be the starting QB still. The fact is that the front office felt pressure (both internally and externally) to win NOW (another Cleveland trait) and in doing so alienated a ton of fans by dumping a QB who gave his all to the franchise and signing an actual predator.

Personally I plan on openly pulling for Carolina to beat the Browns in Week 1 and I’m finding it hard to support my team right now. I know that I’m not the only Browns fan that feels that way by any means.

    Good luck Baker!

  14. That is actually really sad. It is kind of his own fault for trying to force himself to play while having that injury and it clearly affected his mechanics, but at the same time it's really not fair how disrespected he was not just by the fans but by the upper management of the team itself.

Honestly I hope we can revive his career on the Panthers because he deserves better.

  15. I'm a Packers fan but man, fuck the browns. I feel real bad for the fans but that team deserves all the misery it gets. Fuck Deshaun Watson too. I hope Baker proves them all wrong.

  16. Baker was the most consistent QB the Browns have had in a minute only to get thrown under the bus after 1 bad season while playing through injuries

  17. Being transparent, I was never a fan of Baker and called him a bust as soon as I could; but Cleveland allowing Baker to play when he was hurt, hurting the team because he was hurt and just not caring about his health in the long run is unforgivable.

  18. Anyone with more than 3 brain cells would understand that Baker only played so poorly last season because he was injured. The issue is that 3 brain cells is too high to work in the Browns' front office.

  19. I think he is a guy who thought he could ride the chip on his shoulder his entire life, then he found out that the super mutants of the NFL wasteland will eat your chip. But, give him credit, he made it far in life on self belief and that's not bad at all.

  20. Anyone living person that can take the Browns to the Playoffs is basically a folk legend. Anyone playing for a garbage time team is going to be looked at super close. He did pretty damn good. Dude tried his hardest to take Cleveland deep into post season while inquired but, Browns trades QBs in and out like they are nothing. He wanted to hold his spot and prove his worth. I think he is worth it. He will come back hard.

  21. I'm a Virginia Tech fan, and thus didn't like Baker at first because he took the starting job away from Tyrod Taylor, who was the QB at Tech in the late 2000s, early 2010s.

Coincidentally, I am also a Carolina Panthers fan. I want Baker to do well, not only for how the Browns treated him, but also because he could provide success we've been needing and be a mentor to Matt Corral.

  22. Baker really watched film of Matthew Stafford beating the Browns with a dislocated shoulder and thought to himself, "Yeah, I can do that for a season."

  23. I think bakers potential is a lot higher than most people seem to say. Hopefully he has a good season and I’m not a Panthers or Browns fan
