Why cant they make a 55 degree chipper, but with the lie and weighting of the "chipper". It looks like the shots come out 1 feet of the ground and roll forever. A more lofted chipper would be cool. Or maybe they tried more lofted ones in r&d and they dont work.
I purchased the Cleveland Smart Sole Chipper this year based on your review of the product. I struggled with chipping especially with 7,8,9 irons and this has been a big confidence booster for me. This chipper will help you get closer to the hole. If they only had a Smart Sole Putter!!!
Hi Mark great review love the fact your challenging how we approach golf and how we should make it so much easier for ourselves… I have no problem with gaming a chipper but the cleveland one you just cannot buy at the moment!
I have 11 clubs in my bag and one of them is a chipper. It’s very accurate from just off the green.
Not that I use 1 but I wonder how it will feel with a chunky putter grip
So looking at that could I get potentially a really chunky wide sole ‘beginner’ style 7,8 iron and cut it down to putter length?
I put the Cleveland chipper in a couple of months ago after your videos on it and I use it sparingly and haven’t dialed in distance control yet (lack of practice), but I love it. I’ve let higher handicapped people I’ve played with try it after watching them struggle and I know of two that have bought one after trying mine. I had room in the bag after dropping my 3W since my 5W performs just as well if not better. So easy decision and it will only be better with practice. 100% agree with the ego problems in golf. I’m a 5 hcp and use one and people can laugh and mock all they want while I put it closer to the hole all day long. Lol
Not dropping a club out of my bag to put one of those in, especially at their price. I use a 7 iron and a putting stroke to achieve the same thing.
Straight in my bag.
I took out my 58* lob wedge and removed the flop shot from my game. Best decision I've ever made, not because I struggle to flop the ball, I struggle to flop the ball to 1-2 feet. I now chip with my 50* mostly and I'm getting quite a few tap-ins a round, but I'm starting to think a chipper may be something I should try now that I have 13 clubs.
I use a 50 degree and a pitching.
I would have to lose a club to gain a chipper and i dont think (for me) i would use the chipper or gain from using a chipper more than having the extra hybrid in my bag and that's why i will persevere with using an 8 iron or 7 or whatever instead.
Would i add a chipper if i only carried 13 clubs?
Nope I'd put a 7 wood in but thats because I'm very good around the greens….getting to the greens is my issue now I'm getting older.
Another issue (for me) is i haven't seen a lefty chipper so I've never tried 1….. I'm sure someone must make 1 but I've never seen 1 in 40 years.
Why not just learn to chip with any club?
Played In a 1 man scramble this weekend. Guy I played with shot roughly 20 over watched him chip multiple balls over and short of the green or just no where near the hole. Always had atleast something 56 degrees + we aren't pros and we don't practice to get better. I golf in single digits and have never enjoyed a club so much in my bag. I was/am still good with other wedges but golf can be easier so make it easier!
Cop out
I have a spot in the bag so I could use it. Not sure I'd pay that much for it though.
Been on board this ship for 18 months and it’s been brilliant, big improvements in strike, chip closer with more confidence, leads to loads more up and downs, and more just ups and ins. What’s not to like. Chumps try to rib me about it from time to time and mostly proceed to fat and skull chips all day which is hilarious.
I do all of my chipping and 140 yards and in shots with 45°Game improvement pw. It’s funny how so many people I play with who have a much higher handicaps then me give me a hard time about it! 🤷🏼♂️ Only time a touch a high lofted wedge is to hit out of a green side bunker or hit over a green side bunker.
Hey Mark,
Love the videos!
Could you compare the differences between a really high lofted hybrid like the 7 hybrid from Ping against a chipper? You can adjust the Hybrid to be more upright.
It seems as though this would provide more options on the course while still having a “duff proof” chipping club.
If the ego can handle a chipper it could handle an extra hybrid.
We so need Louis / Tyrell / Viktor to play one of these in the open..!
male dominated issues? you just lost a subscriber. good luck.
I bought a smart sole chipper and absolutely love it. Idgaf what anyone says, it does 3x better in my hands than a 8i did doing the same thing.
Superb Mark, leave that ego at home!
I’ve been contemplating a chipper but can’t find any in stock to try. Especially for my Florida trip where the ground is much firmer
Excellent presentation thank you for your time posting this content. A chipper has been in my bag for years, might need to try some of the newer ones on the market now.
Just watched Rick Shiels review this club, I posted asking him to compare it with the Cleveland, apologies I named you, but you found far more reasons to include a chipper, (Cleveland) and I trust your reviews far more.
I once unsubscribed from your channel because it felt was too much product/sponsor driven.
Now… I think your product reviews are the only ones I trust. The analysis, quantification of data and honesty of testing process is not the most exciting, however it is very watchable, and most important, content I would trust.
I feel like these clubs are for people who don't have time or want to practice. I just don't see this being that much better than an 8i where i need to pull a club out of my bag for it.
So for mark he had a deficiency in his game, and the trade off was worth it. But for most people, these are the kind of clubs that make you worse at golf in the long run.
Instead of learning proper technique people want the club that fixes their issue.
Have a questionsuggestion, nothing to do with chippers. I know you like using your Quad for data, but have you ever took it to a mapped out coursehole, and compared the difference between virtual and real reality? Be interesting to see you play the hole from both perspectives on the actual hole, putting the ball where the Quad says it would be.
Thanks Mark. Based on your review of the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 wedges and chipper, I've ordered a set that is expect to arrive in the next few days. Looking forward to putting them in play and seeing some improvement (with any luck.) To make room in my set, I've simply replaced both my 56* SW and 60* LW wedges with the new Cleveland Smart Sole 58* SW.
No, because main name brands are still over priced. Only getting worse.
Great to see ping advertising this bad boy on Instagram today… Got to admit to wanting a chipper
Real golfers don't use gimmic clubs
Can you use it out of thicker rough?
I believe its selling for £160 but probably worth every penny, need to try this or your Cleveland.
I bought the Cleveland end of last season. I do like it but I do find distance control is not easy. I was struggling with chip yips last year and it has helped get me confidence back no doubt. Today I’m using the other wedges with pretty good control.
this is a good idea we are not on TV we're just trying to beat up our friends
What difference would you say there is between using a chipper or using a hybrid? I've been using the hybrid around the green. What's the benefits in changing or is it just a shiny alternative?
That club is ridiculous. People need to quit looking for crutches in golf with these chunky clubs and start actually working on your game!
Mark, I was in the comments on a video about old Ping Eye irons yesterday (I have an old set of Ping Eye irons i sometimes play) someone was saying, and I quote "they disregard Ping as an OEM, and blame them for taking all of the skill out of the game". I asked them what they have in there bag, obviously I'm assuming its a bullseye putter, some old maxfli blades and persimmon woods, all with hickory shafts, presumably they play balls stuffed with goose feathers. They haven't replied yet.
Why they didn’t take the hozel off the clubface face while introducing such a new idea?
Mark, with all the interest and discussion around chippers, would you recommend keeping the shop standard length or getting a chipper cut to the same length putter you use?
I would but it’s ££££
Is there a reasonable counter argument that isn’t just manly ego? Is golf really all about strokes and making whatever changes necessary no matter how ridiculous just to drop a few strokes over a season? Maybe for pros it makes sense, it’s their livelihood. But maybe for some, part of the enjoyment is using certain equipment. Why do you see people at car race tracks with vintage cars with old tech and manual transmissions? They know for a fact they are slower. They could even sell that vintage car and buy one way faster. Because it’s more than just track times and strokes. I find enjoyment playing blades. They are beautiful and I like the challenge and it’s rewarding to me to make a proper swing and get the sound, feel, and shape from them. I ask myself what would make me happier, the enjoyment I get from playing equipment I love, or the enjoyment I would get from saving one stroke per round? Would I even really notice shaving one stroke a round? Because I notice the club I’m using everytime I take a shot.
I've been thinking about getting a chipping club for a while. But ego yes. This thing looks great and 13 clubs in my bag also. So I will definitely get one. Plus I'm a big Ping fan.
I grew up on links courses, you learn how to play a standard chip and run with a variety of irons, and you learn how to play that shot from a variety of lies. My problem is that I do not practice my short game enough so I struggle with distance control rather than strike.
But I completely agree with Mark about needing to take the ego out of golf club selection. So I dropped a 3w from my bag several years ago, last year I dropped my 3h and swapped to a 7w. I have also tried a 9w, and had the gapping worked for my I would have happily put it into my bag. As I get older I will have no problem moving to Halo Launcher type hybrid irons – they may look ugly but if they allow me to play golf and enjoy it I will take it
I use a square strike and love it!!! Between it and the Mazzell I have a 35,45, and 55 degree… love them
My wife bought a square strike chipper from a goodwill outlet last summer, I laughed at first looking at it, then tried it out and its been in my bag ever since. I may have to look at the higher quality versions, but I would never scoff at the concept after using it now.
Ima buy one and name it Mark
