As Billy Horschel took control at the Memorial tournament at Muirfield Village in Ohio, Australians Cameron Smith and Jason Day had moments to celebrate themselves. Day, the 34-year-old former world No.1, shot a four-under to have one of the rounds of the day to move back inside the top 20. The Australian enjoyed back to back hole outs, including a 142-yard eagle on the par-four third.

His incredible iron-in saw the Australian throw his arms in the air and smile with delight and was yet another sign that the former PGA Championship winner is continuing his comeback after considering giving up the game. Fellow Australian Cameron Smith had an up-and-down round and finished with an even 72 to be in a share of second at eight-under, five shots behind Horschel. Smith, who is bidding to become just the second player to win The Players Championship and Memorial Tournament in the same year, started the round with back to back bogeys. But the short-game wizard finished spectacularly, showing off his incredibly chipping with a sublime flop shot on 18. “Incredible. Absolutely fantastic. Wow,” former major winner Nick Faldo said. “That’s the lob of the year that one. “Talking about attitude, decided to go for it and really pulls it off.” Horschel fired a brilliant seven-under-par 65 to take a commanding five-shot lead after the third round. Horschel’s superb short play engineered seven birdies in a flawless bogey-free round that saw the American pull clear at the top of the leaderboard at 13-under 203 after 54 holes.
