Good. Marking on a club gives an unfair advantage. I drew a smiley face on my driver once and hit a hole in one on the second green from the first tee. Don’t worry though, I gave myself a 30 stroke penalty and washed off the marking.

This rule is bullshit and shouldn’t exist, but if it has to be there then it should come with penalty strokes assessed, similar to the way having too many clubs in the bag is enforced.

I think Matsuyama was using this three wood on the practice range perhaps to improve his impact and accuracy but then either he or the caddie put the wrong 3 wood in the bag before the official round started. Probably a honest mistake

ive definitely hit my ball right after putting sharpie markings on it and the ink transfered to the face of my club… totally unintentional.would that be a rules infraction even if it wasnt intended as a cheat?
I like how everyone acts like Moses came down a mountain with golf rules etched on a tablet when they are 100% arbitrary.
He was shooting 4 over by the time the dq came. Common sense would dictate, that you just make him change the club. I also love that there is no appeal process, for any of it. It is just up to the discretion of five or six 60+ years old.
The rules official that told him he was DQ made sure to be real somber and act he was best friends with Matsuyama in the post interview. Yet his old buddy never bothered to physically inspect the clubs.

I don’t think a lot of people here understood why he was penalized. It’s was not a regular marking from play. It was the sprayed on foot spray etc that players use during practice to see where they are making impact. He forgot to wipe it off. Rules are rules. He handled it like a champ. Just saying most people do look at their club face before hitting. He just didn’t notice it.
This is why so many PGA golfers are leaving and going to play overseas. PGA is getting ridiculous.
His club manufacturers now putting a white mark on the club that he will be using it next tournament.
