The player was inside the maintenance shed (an immovable obstruction), that was inside a penalty area, and therefore there is no free relief available. However, there was a doorway that the player wanted to hit through. This time around the door was open, but what if it was closed, could the player have opened it to play their shot?

Yes, although the shed is an immovable obstruction, the door would be considered a movable obstruction, even if it was shut.
