In this Special Animal Rescue mini-series, we’re in Sumatra with conservation organisation SUMECO. In this episode we are on a snake rescue mission, the key species to monitor is the King Cobra ( Ophiophagus hannah ), which is an endangered species. It is the nesting season and the Queen Cobras (the females) are most vulnerable as they guard the nests for 2 months, sometimes right by communities where they are feared and often killed. The SUMECO team monitor and protect the King Cobras.
ABOUT SUMECO: it is an organisation set up by Bobi Handoko, a conservationist. SUMECO are based on the outskirts of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a sanctuary for wildlife, including the Orangutan, Sumatran Rhino, Elephant, Gibbon, Sun Bear, Pangolin, Slow Loris and other iconic mammal species

The Science:
With over 1 Million species on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, animal populations are in decline the world over. This is due to many reasons but what we know for sure is to keep the planet’s amazing diversity of wildlife we need to learn as much as possible about where and how these creatures live their lives. Collating all the data we are gathering will help build a picture of which habitats are key to sustaining the largest diversity of life on planet earth.
