Testing Wood Golf Clubs | PING Eye 2 5-Wood

Golf clubs have changed drastically over the years. Wooden golf clubs used to be the state-of-the-art design. Needless to say, the performance of golf clubs has improved quite a bit since the era of wood golf clubs.

In this video, 2nd Swing’s Drew Mahowald and Michael Geiger test out a PING Eye 2 5-wood, which is actually made of Maplewood. Using Trackman technology, Drew and Michael provide their feedback on the performance and the feel.

  1. Great, fun video! State of the art back in the day. Btw, it's laminated maple not persimmon.

  2. They came out around 1982, if I remember correctly. I still have a driver, 3w, and 5w in the eye 2 woods.

  3. I find that the biggest difference from old to new is lighter materials so they can be made longer, and the ability to move the cog down for lower lofts, lower spin, and etc. If you hit the old stuff on the screws, it's not that far behind in my experience.

  4. Glad to see Michael is an addition and not a replacement for Drew! 👍👍

  5. Looks like these are better for a sweeper than someone with a downward AoA

  6. Believe it or not I still have my 1,3,and5 Karsten Blond woods. The 5 wood is always in the bag. 225 off the turf and when I need to take a short cut on a dog leg over trees I will tee it up high and get 235 with plenty of clearance. My son sometimes puts the 3 wood in his bag. And yes, if you hit the toe it will twist right out of your grip.

  7. Pretty sure that's laminated maple, not Persimmon 🙂 Drew, did you have family in Grand Forks? Knew a mahowald in high school

  8. so weird to think that the Ping Eye 2 irons are still quite good by today's standards and yet they were released next to actual woods

  9. This isn't persimmon. It is laminated maple. Laminated maple made it easier to control moisture levels in the wood. It was also more consistent and more durable than persimmon. It also wouldn't split/crack.

  10. I owned these woods years ago loved them then traded them in for modern technology my 3 wood was my favorite could hit it straight every time blindfolded

  11. NOTE: Hey golfers, Drew here. The PING Eye 2 woods were made from laminated maple wood, and not persimmon. Our mistake! Clearly a club that was before the time of myself and Michael 😅

  12. i have a 4 wood of one of those, the grip is hard as a rock but i rocked it for a bit prob 15 years ago. when i was about 15.

  13. I am currently playing with my grandpa's old Ping Eye 2 irons and they are awesome, can't believe they were released with actual wooden clubs!

  14. Drew has a sweeper swing and Michael has a steeper hit into the ball. So even though his clubhead speed is slower he tended to get better efficiency out of the club.

  15. I used my Ping Eye 2 5 Wood yesterday. My brother bought me the 1,3 & 5 wood set for Christmas in 1988 or 89. I later bought the 7 wood for myself. I would like to find a place to refinish them complete with the Heel Toe Balance decal.
