How to Stop Standing Up in Your Golf Swing

If you are being told to stop standing up in golf downswing and you need an early extension fix, this golf lesson from Todd Kolb is just what you need!

Learn how to maintain hip hinge in the golf swing and keep good golf posture by creating an easy to repeat golf swing for seniors!

It’s gotta be one of the most frustrating tips your buddies give you.

“Stop standing up in your golf swing. That’s why you keep topping the golf ball.”

Are they right?

Yeah, probably.

But if it were that easy to stop standing up mid-swing, you would have fixed the problem by now.

A lot of golfers struggle to fix this bad habit simply because they don’t understand why it’s happening in the first place.

If you want it to stop, you’ve got to fix the issue that makes your body instinctively stand up.

In today’s golf lesson, you’ll learn why this keeps happening, and you’ll get a three-point checklist to make sure it never happens again.

Watch the video and finally stop topping the ball.

It’s incredible how fast we can fix our faults just by learning how to work with our bodies instead of fighting against them.

That’s why I created the Vertical Line Swing system.

Traditional instruction tells us we’ve got to make crazy demands of our bodies in order to play a great game.

A lot of deep twisting, raw power, tension, and restriction…

…things that might be possible for young professionals but don’t make a lot of sense for the rest of us.

My swing technique sets your body up for success.

It’s the only swing designed with the average golfer in mind.

And it’s the reason thousands of casual golfers are playing the best game of their lives, even in their retirement years.

  1. In your final demonstration of all of the tips you discussed you first tilt your head as in your tip as you set up to swing the club, but as you swing your head tilt goes in the opposite direction. I was confused by this. Did I miss something.

  2. Thanks Todd. Have been working hard on correcting this issue. Toe flair has helped and will try head tilt next. I know I’ve got a ways to go as I’ve always been a ‘picker’ but with age have found myself making more and more contact with the leading edge of the club. Wondering if I reduce shaft angle a little if that would add loft and take the leading edge out of the equation. Watching your videos from Northern Va.

  3. Amazing. I actually am really struggling with this due to playing indoors during our last Maine winter after back surgery. I played four terrible rounds in a row since the courses opened, and THIS and putting are killing me. I was pleased to see this as today's video, and am glad I have subscribed. As a senior golfer, with some serious disabilities, I find your tips to be very helpful, and they seem geared more to "regular" players, rather than near scratch golfers. Thanks. BTW…….Your putting tip about slightly hitting down on the ball, with an upward swing, really seemed to help, yesterday. Only one three putt when I had been averaging at least five.

  4. This is Leonard from California. I’d like to suggest that for your outdoor lessons, you use red balls. They would be much easier for us to follow your strike.

  5. This is the best golf advice for my 40 years of "head popping". Simple and clear. Thanks!

  6. Hey Todd. This is something I have been trying to work on. At the 5:32 mark of the video, your head is actually tilted some what opposite direction of what you were discussing. What you did at 5:32 is something I been working on. Could you clarify or I did I miss something. Thanks so much.

  7. Good morning Todd from San Antonio. Always appreciate your help. I’ve been struggling a lot from greenside bunkers (I bet you have content around that already). Would love to see a future video around that.
