WHW #279: WCW Slamboree 1997

What a difference a year made in the life of World Championship Wrestling! In last week’s podcast we looked back on Slamboree 1996, an event most fans hated. A year later? Most everyone loved Slamboree 1997. The advent of the nWo had a lot to do with that, but so did the return of Ric Flair after being off for eight months with shoulder problems. Flair teams with Roddy Piper and Kevin Greene of the NFL to face Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Syxx in the main event.

But there is so much more, including a great opening match between Lord Steven Regal vs. Ultimate Dragon, and others including Rey Mysterio, the Steiners, Dean Malenko, Jeff Jarrett, Chris Benoit, and Meng, Konnan, and more. Get ready for a great time watching Slamboree 1997…and watch out for the F***ing GOOSE!

  1. The reason why i dont buy anything as much as other fans is because im poor, but that shouldnt make me less of a fan.

  2. The reason why AEW doesnt have as many fans is because they dont have as many kids and elders watching like WWE. They are 2 different products for 2 different demographics.

  3. Okay. Cool. AEW sells out arenas. How often do sports teams, Metallica, etc sell out? They also have last minute ticket buyers.

  4. Great opening match. I remember watching wcw and wrestling in general in this era and I hated how every english wrestlers always got stuck with that stupid "god save the queen" blue blood gimmick. Although it would have likely been too worldly for the TV audience at the time, I would've much preferred to see Steve Regal play up the blackpool heritage, with blackpool being home of streetwise hustlers, carnies, and con-men. The blue blood attitude really undersold the variety of English regions, and was way too cartoony
