MORE PARS GOLF TIP: Why You’re Losing Forward Shaft Lean (top culprits examined)

#morepars
If you want more pars but struggling with thin or fat shots from the fairway, let’s examine the top culprits of why you’re losing forward shaft lean. For solid strikes, your hands need to be leading during the downswing and into impact for the ultimate compression. Hands leading with a square face that is. Once you identify your culprit, you’ll be on your way to compressing the ball better. So, let’s get to it!

  1. These are all amazing points. You nailed it. A person’s mobility strongly influences their swing. Just as you mentioned, you’ll need one of 2 things to have a square face coming into impact… A strong grip, or a bowed left wrist. You better have TONS of hip rotation, and right side bend to play with BOTH(DJ). Again, as you mentioned, most amateurs come into impact with square hips, and shoulders. Basically, no hip rotation, and no right side bend(shoulders too level at impact). This forces you to flip the face to square it, and a lot of amateurs have taught themselves to play this way, because of their weak grip. I highly recommend experimenting with extremes, to figure things out for yourself. Take a really weak grip, and try to hit a hook. You’ll find that you need to stall your body, and flip the face closed to hit that shot. Now, take a really strong grip, and start the ball right. This one will really open your eyes! You’ll learn how to turn, and take the right shoulder down, under, and through to hold off the release. I don’t recommend either of these extremes for actually “playing golf”. However, they will give you sensations that you may have never felt, or understood. You’ll start understanding the golf swing better, and be able to find middle ground much easier. Great content, by the way.

  2. Hi Christina; might forwards shaft lean with a slight bend of the trail knee be a great way to trigger the swing since done correctly with the preferred neutral grip it mimics our impact zone to our ball? Cheers

  3. In my experience the lack of forward shaft lean at impact occurs because there wasnt enough at address, make sure to have the hands forward of the ball at address helps to get back to that position or thereabouts at impact which is critical
