  1. The lunacy of all this is the fact that the broadcast networks have rules analyst on each telecast. Get over it and hit the dang ball.

  2. This ruling is incorrect. The line starts at the hole and extends indefinitely passed the ball. He did not, in fact, straddle said line. Surprised the rules official didn't know that.

  3. Does the rule apply when you are on the edge of the water and stand backwards and and swing under and back towards the hole ?

  4. I'm all for common sense application of the rules, but that would also mean we've have gone without Tiger's fans moving thousand pound boulders that were "loose impediments" on a technicality.

  5. It was meant to eliminate croquet style putting. It did. You cannot argue the shot would not have been harder had he not straddled the line. That's why the rule is there. You can't have the swallow the whistle moment because in 140+(most of the time) man fields, 40-something week a year sport is better held with non-human rules. The rules are in a book. When human decisions come into the practicing of the rules of a high-stake sport, you get the kind of stuff that happened in F1, the Saints-Rams no PI call, and the countless suspicious calls or no calls in baseball and basketball. Given the fact that the "interpretation" or "letting it slide" would affect not one opposing entity like in a team sport, but rather the entire rest of the field who will not be subjected to any graces with respect to the rules, doing so would compromise the integrity of the competition.

The rules are extensive but at the PGA Tour level, the guys should know when they're in violation of a set of rules that fits in 1 book and can be read through in an hour and a half. This rule being broken made the shot easier. That's the point. I'm sure the official would've been more than happy to inform him of the incoming infringement had he asked. But the official shouldn't do so if not prompted because the rest of the field doesn't have a preventative official at their side for each situation they get into.

In terms of your "cannot hit a ball in motion" mention, it technically is oscillating, just as it could be in high winds if propped up on high bermuda rough.

The rules are designed so that in the event of there being no official, if players know the rules, they can play to the same standard without a full-time official.

  6. I agree it’s ridiculous. Same as no relief from ball in fairway divot is ridiculous. Many of these rules have no common sense. Uggg 😬😬😬

  7. I am surprised they didn't try to penalize him for hitting a ball in motion because the wind was blowing the moss.

  8. absolutely a shame they called him on that. the term straddle means standing over something with you feet. what a bunch of idiots that thought that rule applied to that situation. they wonder why players may go to LIV league… this is prime example.

  9. I barely know the rules of golf, but knew immediately upon seeing Fratelli standing directly behind the ball what the violation was. As ridiculous as it is, golf is a side-on sport. If he slides over 6 inches …he’s good.

  10. How do they know it wasn’t a shank and a bad shot went good? It’s obviously not. But is it??????

  11. For what it's worth, the ball was NOT moving in the moss. The definition of "moved" cites an identical example; If a ball is resting on a tree branch and the tree branch moves/sways, the ball is not deemed to have moved as long as the ball remains in the same spot on the tree branch. (Moved/1). Same applies to the moss. The ball might have been swaying with the moss but as long as the ball didn't change spots within the moss, it hasn't moved.

  12. Golf is hard enough without these ridiculous rules. I hate the divot rule, play ball as it lies, some divots are 1” deep and hacking it out leads to a safety issue- pick and place is common sense.

  13. You need to get a dedicated timer and stop using your phone or set your phone to not go to sleep. Watching you constantly wake your phone was so annoying.

  14. Rules are rules. You can't just apply them when you think it makes sense, because you leave too much room for interpretation. Don't like it? Oh well. Learn the rules and follow them.

  15. A rule is a rule. He should have just stood sideways and played the shot. Nothing wrong with the rule. He didn't realise it and got penalised. Trust me, he will never hit a shot like that again

  16. The dude had to hit a ball hanging in a tree, blowing in the wind. Did they not think he had been penalised enough just by sh1tty luck?

  17. If interpreting the rules under the vague classification of common sense, we would be complaining when one player is penalised and another is not in a similar situation by different officials. Strict adherence means a level playing field for all players.

  18. The dumbest golf rule is where you drive your ball from the tee into a divot in the fairway and you cannot get a free drop out of it. You are supposed to put your ball in the fairway to give you advantage over someone in the rough. But these old age great grandfather protecting the rules of golf Do not think so. Haha

  19. Technically, you straddle the ball at address according to what the dictionary defines as straddle…

It's the line of swing that they must be questioning. PGA players have hit balls between their legs from silly lies.

Also, the ball has not come to rest as it has not came down from its flight as after struck by player…

  20. WOW!!! I actually had no idea of this rule! I agree with you 100% – this is crazy! What about Michelle Wi and her completely bending over while putting..? Dylan should've said he wasn't straddling his line, it was just a horrible slice!

  21. Is a shame because he shows incredible skill and imagination to pull that shot off! He should be rewarded not penalised. Come on ref get a life.🤔🏌️‍♂️😇

  22. Cant hit a ball in motion. S.W Kim's put was still moving on the edge of the hole and was penalised for it.

  23. Players often STAND ACROSS the Line of Play, to DETERMINE the Line of Play.
    Watch the "Aimpoint" Players.
Standing BEHIND the Ball and ACROSS the Line of Play to again DETERMINE Where to Aim on Shots happens all the time. This is one Reason the Rules Official didn't stop him.
(Rules Officials generally can only advise a Player who is about to proceed Incorrectly when the Ball is Out of Play – Teeing Up improperly; deciding upon the proper way to take either Free or Penalty Relief; whether or not Movement was or wasn't caused by the Player and needs to be either Replaced OR Played from the New Position.)

Standing Across the Line of Play only becomes Illegal WHEN a Player begins the Swing.
The only Decision about Enforcing the Rules is the Determination of Whether or Not a Rule has been Infracted and has thus incurred the Appropriate Penalty.

  24. Interesting video, but what the hell are you constantly pressing with your left hand????

  25. I was the shotlink walking scorer for Fritelli that day. We had a rules official there. He gave no advice about straddling.

  26. They absolutely CAN and SHOULD tell him before he makes the attempt. 3.2d(2-3) -which is under match play…so I could be wrong…says as much. In my opinion, it’s certainly within the spirit of the rules that an official should have told him about the issue, even though this was stroke play.

  27. The same rule could apply to people back handing the shot in from the other side of the hole when it over shoots a foot or two because you are looking at it and hitting the ball in the same manner Dylan Frittelli hit the shot, but nobody ever call it a foul shot.

  28. Because the situation was so extraordinary, a rules official should have immediately been called to the scene and provided 100% guidance as to what the player could and could not do. The PGA should be more proactive with it's professional players when it comes to possible rules infractions. They should be there making the game better not just waiting to punish players who are trying to earn a living. It's embarrassing to the PGA that they let it happen.

  29. I didn’t see the play in question until you showed it. As soon as I saw it, I knew the penalty. Plain and simple it’s against the rules. It was put into to effect for Sam Snead who used to straddle his line to putt. So he went to a side-straddle style of putting. In golf, you call the penalty on yourself. No ref to blow a whistle. It’s against the rules, plain and simple.

  30. My personal favorite bs violation was when this one pro had to play a shot on his knees, didn’t want to get his pants dirty so he put a towel down, got a penalty for that, dumb

  31. I agree that sometimes golf's rules are pretty ridiculous, as in this case. That said, it's up to each player to learn the rules so they don't violate them unknowingly and in no way should the rules officials be allowed to start offering tips or hints to a player in any circumstance unless that player directly asks them something relating to that rule. If this were allowed, it would turn into a nightmare where you have officials treating players differently and offering up more or less rules info pre-shot depending on who they do and don't like.

  32. If you are lucky enough to be a PGA Golfer you should #1 Know the rules, #2 if you don’t know the rules CALL FOR AN OFFICIAL. Most of all no real golfer should complain about rules.
