Women's Golf Set to Compete at Lady Red Wolf Classic Monday and Tuesday

JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s golf team is set to compete at the Lady Red Wolf Classic, hosted by Arkansas State University, on Monday and Tuesday at Sage Meadows Country Club.

The tournament begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, as 36 holes will be played on the first day. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.

The course is a par 72 and is 6,138 yards long.

The Competition
Along with the Broncs and the Red Wolves, other schools competing at are: Arkansas-Monticello, McLennan Community College, Stephen F. Austin, Southern Illinois, Redlands Community College, Louisiana-Monroe and Jackson State.

Last Time Out
Senior Melissa Bernal tied the second lowest single-round score in program history with her final round 70 at the Harold Funston Invitational.

Bernal tied Daniela Cortes and UTPA Athletics Hall-of-Fame Inductee Nancy Verástegui’s mark of 70 that was recorded in 2005 and 1995 respectively. Bernal fell one stroke shy of Majo Camey’s program record of 69, which was set at the UC Classic in 2008.

Bernal shot her final round one-under par 70, the lowest round of the tournament, after wrapping up her second round with a 76. She finished in a tie for seventh place with a three-round score of 223 (77,76,70).

Senior Blake Peterson turned in a 76 in the second and final rounds as she finished in 20th place with a three-round score of 236 (84,76,76). Senior Marisa Canales shot a second round 79 and a final round 78 to finish in 24th place with a three-round score of 241 (84,79,78). Sophomore Kelsey Canales shot a three-round score of 244 (79,83,82) as she finished in a tie for 27th and Edcouch Elsa High School alum Ashley Garcia posted a second round 84 and a final round 79 to finish in a tie for 30th with a three-round score of 246 (83,84,79).

As a team, the Broncs shot a second round 314 and then bounced back in the final round with a 303 to finish in fifth place with a three-round score of 940 (323,314,303).

Last Time at Lady Red Wolf Classic
The Broncs last competed at the Lady Red Wolf Classic on October 12, 2009.

The Broncs finished the rained shortened tournament in ninth place. Junior Haley Hocott had the best day for the Broncs as she finished day one with a two-round score of 153 (77-76) to finish in a tie for eighth.

Rebecca De Leon posted a two-round score of 164 (85-79) as she finished tied for 40th, while Majo Camey and Sarah Kothny finished with a one-stroke difference as Camey posted a 165 (84-81) and Kothny a 166 (86-80).

Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on November 3 when they compete at the UTB Ocelot Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas at Brownsville.
